The United States told the United Nations General Assembly in Paris that there must be data to resolve the Korea deadlock. The brief remarks stressed evidence and verification as a path to progress.
Canada’s cost of living rose in December pushing the index to a record 191.5 points. The December advance followed a 0.4 point rise after November saw a 0.1 point decline, the first drop in 23 months. A CHW Carman Manitoba radio tower crash killed six when three Beechcraft planes hit the 570 foot structure. The tower bent about 80 feet and collapsed after a night of strong winds.
The Cairo report claims Britain proposed a Middle East peace plan including evacuation of the Suez Canal zone a plebiscite in Sudan and an Arab security pact as a defence basis. The Al Misrie newspaper cites London backing a formula presented to Egyptian premier Nuri El Said Betar and King Ibn Saud in mediation efforts.
Dauphin post office returned 123 of nearly 400 Old Age Pension cheques to the Winnipeg regional office for re addressing. Postmaster Jim Newell advised recipients to verify mailing addresses and notify the district treasury office of any changes to avoid future errors.
Canada will proclaim a national day of mourning once the King's funeral date is set. The town council and ministers decided citizens will attend their own churches to pay respects, with services held simultaneously across the community for Dauphin and district.
Dauphin Parks Board at February 4 meeting re elected R P Scott as chair and Dr R E Dicks as vice chair. George Sumpter named chair of parks and boulevards committee with James Anderson L G Sneath and Ed Johansen as members. Contest offers $10 prizes for best park names open to the public with April 5 deadline. 1952 budget approved with revenues about 5700 and Dauphin town share 2400. cabin improvements funded to raise cabin X 3 rating to five stars.
More than 100 citizens attended the Civil Defense Nursing Auxiliary meeting in the Dauphin health unit auditorium. R W Payne of Winnipeg urged enlistment and training of auxiliary nurses as Manitoba’s civil defense program leads the nation. Two films on survival under atomic attack were shown. training will take 12 weeks at two hours weekly. Adeline Tokar runs nurse registrations at the town hall with 40 applications by noon Tuesday and a February 6 deadline.
The Dauphin-Ochre area board agreed to complete construction of the Sifton school. Ed Johansen reported expenditures to date and the projected total under 65 000. By February 1 total outlay reached 40 108 58 with the workshop and auditorium expected to finish within the estimate and contractors still on site.
Dauphin Kings overwhelmed Neepawa 15-2 in game one of the best of five semi finals at the local arena. Bill Murray scored seven goals and set up others while Mosi Enk o and Tamblyn aided the attack as Dauphin raced to a 7-0 lead and cruised to the victory despite Neepawa's late efforts.
At the annual Feb 2 meeting in the rest room Mrs. V H Rampton was chosen president of the Rest Room board. Other officers include past president Mrs. W D Strang, vice president Mrs. Cecil Durston, and secretary.
London announces King George VI died in his Sandringham residence. Accession Council proclaims Princess Elizabeth queen. Elizabeth, then in South Africa, will fly to London for coronation plans and funeral date awaits her arrival. Ottawa announces death and accession with national mourning to follow.
Princess Elizabeth, age 23, proclaimed Queen Elizabeth the Second by the Accession Council in London. She becomes the first ruling queen since Victoria and will consult with royal advisers on duties as she returns from Kenya to London.
