Delegates from the town and rural council met to settle transfer terms for subdivisions. The rural seeks 25 per lot plus transfer fees for lots now owned, while the town offers tax free transfer and no cash payment. After 1 hour 47 minutes the issue remained undecided and will go to each council for final decision.
The Dauphin ladies curling club opened its annual bonspiel with a record 25 rinks from Yorkton Canora McKenzie and others. The event expands from three to four days with finals Friday and a banquet held in Oddfellows hall. External skips include Mrs H E Gert Portage and others while local skips listed include Mrs W Cruise and Mrs J Delmage.
Directors of the agriculture society announced a three day fair for July 7 9 with plans to rejoin the B circuit and attract many attractions from that circuit. Horse racing prize money rises and a new grandstand show with trained dogs and trapeze acts is planned. Casey Shows will supply the midway with two new rides including electrical bumper cars. Industrial hall prize money increases and exhibits are expected to break last year’s record. The society backs the Dauphin March short course and offers 25 for a seed grain show in conjunction.
A Manitoba blizzard snarled travel with cancelled trains and buses as snowplows cleared main routes No 5 and No 10 by Tuesday. By Wednesday the Roblin Russell and Swan River roads were opened and Winnipegosis outlooked for week end clearance.
The Carnival Queen winner will receive an all expenses paid trip to Chicago. She will guest on Don Macneil's Breakfast Club on CBC at 8 15 a m. A second ballot count is set for Feb 15. Crowning occurs during both matinee and evening shows featuring Western Canada skating talent. Four contestants Vi Clarke Yaela McDonald Doreen Pitcher Jean Smith are elected by ticket votes sold before 8 p.m. Feb 28. door tickets will count as votes.
H D Brewer, leading dairy farmer and Jersey breeder, sold his 60 herd and retires from farming after 16 years as a C N R agent. He installed modern dairy equipment, planted a tree belt, and served on the Dauphin school board and Masonic Lodge before leaving for the west coast.
Norman Pollon suffered a burned hand after a fire in the town garage behind the power station at 9 a m Thursday. He and other workers were starting a diesel motor when a removed spark plug allowed gasoline to ignite blowing flames from the plug hole. Pete Lesyshen dragged him from the fire and rolled him in snow before taking him to the hospital for several days of treatment.
G A Wrighton of the Manitoba Power Commission urged wiring of homes and businesses in Valley River and Sifton during a Dauphin visit. He warned of upcoming line construction and a lack of electricians and materials, calling for immediate survey completion to aid rural Dauphin farmers in the 1948 farm electrification plan.
During 1940 to 1946 the Red Cross Society of Dauphin collected 61414.56, sending 58479.39 to Winnipeg HQ. Annual drives raised 5653.71 in 1940, 6227.30 in 1942, 14146.17 in 1943, 16905.78 in 1944, 15228.54 in 1945, and 3253.08 in 1946. The women’s committee shipped 17015 items, including 4880 knitted, 11509 sewn, 402 quilts, and 224 blankets.
E Teddy Mayo was taken to hospital with a broken right shoulder blade a lacerated eye and bruises after being thrown from a fire truck responding to a No 16 Ninth Avenue S W call. The incident occurred on Gladys Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues when the vehicle veered into a snow bank and ditch. two other riders escaped injury though Constable W Thompson reported an injured knee and scalp laceration. The new truck bent a rear spring while the older engine completed the fire fight.
J L Bowman KC resigns after leading the Red Cross society in Dauphin through both world wars. Dr C B Robertson elected president, W D Strang named vice president, J W Oliver becomes secretary treasurer after M Szewczyk resigns. Executive committee members listed.
