Auditors reveal Gumcapeity of Deuphin overran its budget by 84 000 for the year ending 1947. The deficit stems from 50 000 from the reserve fund and 34 000 from cash surplus and loans, funding new machinery and flood damage repairs.
Area board overspent by 90000 on Henderson and Mackenzie changes to become Composite High. It borrowed 50000 from a bank and seeks 40000 from the Department of Education to finish work. Total 186000 spent on 1947 construction and equipment with 65000 on Mackenzie alterations. Province to supply 40000 may raise debt to 90000 repayable over three years. Easter target for remaining Henderson classrooms and auditorium.
A trophy for the Dauphin high school bonspiel was bought by the local board at its semi monthly meeting Monday evening. Local rinks began games after four each day as finals, with many outside rinks, will be held Friday and Saturday. There was doubt about obtaining the trophy in time for this year’s competition.
Gilbert Plains sports men edged Dauphin 1 0 in the second playoff game to win the series on a two goal margin despite Dauphin’s offensive push in the final period. Foulston left with a facial cut during the second period but Gilbert Plains sheltered a stand in goalie to preserve the margin. Bantams and Midgets from Dauphin also enter provincial playoffs with plans to select all star teams from local Pee Wee and Midget leagues.
Dauphinite readers note a late January shift from mild weather to a sharp cold snap with temperatures dropping to minus 22.8 degrees. The local meteorological office records January highs of 38.3 degrees and a low of minus 38.3 degrees, a mean of 3.9. Snowfall totals 8.86 inches with water equivalent of 0.86 inches.
A plane trip to Toronto and an appearance on Claire Wallace's radio program are the prize for the Carnival Queen, with the winner leaving March 6 to appear March 10. Voting uses 100 votes per ticket and bonuses change by count, with a final non bonus tally on February 27. Joan Johannesson leads with 135 000 votes, followed by Shirley Williams 82 500, Helen Ward 55 500, and Elsie Russell 52 500.
The provincial municipal commissioner hikes demands on town and rural municipalities for 1948. Town levy rises to 6480.04 from 4675.14 while rural demand climbs to 10759.06 from 7827.97. In rural areas old age pensions and municipal assessments show large increases.
The Dauphin board of trade, by an almost unanimous vote, expressed support for the manufacture and sale of margarine in Canada. The motion followed a request from associated boards of trade for an official opinion. A local margarine member warned that surplus butter would be exported at lower prices than domestic sales.
The Dauphin board of trade holds its annual banquet Thursday February 5 at the town hall starting at 6 p.m. This year both ladies and gentlemen are invited to attend to hear Commissioner W. G. Coventry.
A Dauphin area school board meeting resolved jurisdiction over buildings and grounds to the local board while the area board retains authority on educational purchases and curriculum related items. The two boards will meet if disputes arise and teacher appointments remain local.
The volunteer fire brigade answered a call to the home of Peter Smereko at 115 Eighth Avenue S.W. at 7 30 pm Saturday to quell a chimney fire.
