Dauphin Town Seeks Higher Street Lighting Allowance

The town seeks a substantial annual increase for street lighting expenditures. At the December 21 council meeting, officials discussed raising the spending limit for street lighting purposes.

Fork River Woman Dies In Accident Christmas Eve

A 57 year old Fork River woman, Tillie Spikuluk, died in a Christmas Eve crash at No 20 highway and George Street near Winnipegosis. Peter Zuk, driver of the one half ton truck, was charged with impaired driving. An inquest is set for Jan 12 in Winnipegosis.

March of Dimes Campaign Planned in Dauphin

A Dauphin drive slated for January 16 includes a Mothers March of Dimes canvass and a monster dance at the town hall hosted by Plainsmen orchestra to raise funds for the polio fund. Last year the campaign netted 1404 with sources from residential, schools, business canvass, radio and mail.

Dauphin Regional Festival Dates Set for May 3 to 8

The Dauphin Regional Festival will run May 3 to 8 with Dorothy Swetnam of Calgary G R Rowe of Brandon and Hart Devenney of Winnipeg as adjudicators for music spoken poetry and choral reading and folk dancing. The Dauphin lodge of the B P O Elks will oversee the festival campaign.

Predator Is Used For Reviving Man

The rescue squad of the local fire department used the predator device to revive a local man suffering from carbon monoxide effects on a Saturday, Dec 19. After over ten minutes of operation the man regained consciousness and received medical attention immediately. Fire Chief Gordon Harrison heads the rescue squad which operates the device around the clock.

Festivities Of Ukrainian Christmas Packed With Color And Tradition

A 15 year old Sylvia G Talpash describes Ukrainian Christmas in the Dauphin district. The holiday begins Jan 6 with a Holy Supper of twelve dishes and a Kolash bread centerpiece. Carols, midnight Mass, home blessings, carollers, and the phrase Christos Razdayetsa mark the season.

M F U Meeting Monday On PFAA Survey

The Manitoba Farmers' Union will hold a meeting Monday January 4 at 8 p.m. in the Dauphin town hall to discuss the recent PFAA survey in the Duck and Riding Mountain watershed. Attendees include municipal representatives chambers of commerce and local business people.

Year Ending Temperatures Dawdle Through Warm Christmas

After a warm Christmas, Dauphin saw temperatures rise to the high 20s and 30s before a sharp plunge to a new season low of minus 27.8 degrees this Tuesday. Precipitation remained light during the period.

Best Ever Light-Up Campaign Achieves Wide Town Praise

The Dauphin chamber awards prizes for the top three Christmas decorations with George H. Munro winning for Rudolph the blinking nose. Second and third prizes tie between Dr. R. E. Dicks and Gordon Fitzgerald, and John H. Yeo with R. N. Dodds. Judges call 1953 the best yet with extensive displays and river avenues praised. Honorable mentions include Williamson on Avenue N and the CNR display.

Dauphin Curling Bonspiel Opens January 18

The 56th annual Dauphin Men's curling bonspiel runs January 18 to 23 with seven events. Official opening is January 18 at the Dauphin Memorial curling rink. Entries close January 16 with secretary Neil McDonald.
