President Truman unveiled a broad mobilization plan calling for rapid expansion of production, inflation control, higher taxes, longer work days, and defense spending. He appointed Charles Wilson to lead the Office of Defense Mobilization to accelerate aircraft output and electronics. Congress approved a large military fund, with more requests likely, as the nation braces for a sustainment of wartime momentum.
A government appeal ended a three day walkout by United States railroad switchmen in a wage hour dispute with carriers. Trainmen sought 48 hours pay for a 40 hour week, matching concessions won by other unions last year. Conductors were not involved. The army previously took technical control to avert a broader strike.
Canada will remove its final emergency import controls on capital goods and consumer goods on January second. Ottawa expects higher imports and dollar scarcity trends amid the shift, noting foreign plants moved to Canada to avoid restrictions. The move aims to boost factory investment though effects on trade are uncertain.
Normal December temperatures prevailed in the Dauphin area during the past week with highs near 20 above normal and lows around 23.6 below. Snow accumulation exceeded two inches for the period with a one inch snowfall Wednesday and smaller amounts Thursday Sunday and Tuesday.
The Dauphin chamber of commerce launched a light-up drive urging every home and business to display colored Christmas lights and ornaments through the holiday season. A light-up committee led by R. L. Dennison, R. K. Whitmore, H. H. Hill, A. D. Shackelford and Paul Nyznik coordinates the campaign to brighten the town’s Christmas.
The Dauphin chamber of commerce urged residents to illuminate the town for Christmas and by Tuesday night many had complied. Main street festoon lights glow in red green and added bright yellow. trees on light standards are planned for this year with future expansion hopes. A courthouse tree stands at Main and Fourth Avenue South, with other lights brightening homes, yards, and a palace of ice display. Santa lights and spotlights highlight the festive scene as citizens cooperate to make Dauphin a teal bright spot this holiday season.
The Dauphin Herald announces a Christmas edition break with no publication next week and a return on January 4. The Herald office closes Monday and Tuesday for Christmas and Boxing Days, resumes regular hours Wednesday through Saturday, and remains closed Monday January 1 for New Year’s Day.
The town council accepted a draft agreement with the rural municipality to transfer subdivisions including plans 417, 420, 421, 422, 119, 542, 1016, 785 and 737 plus exhibition grounds. The single change requires residents to have lived in the subdivision for one year before the town assumes hospitalization relief liability.
Grain deliveries to this Dauphin area are lower than last year though total may exceed 1,240,000 bushels. As of Dec 8 1,012,270 bushels delivered. 363 cars shipped vs 547 last year. in store 225,810 bushels. Estimated remaining deliveries: 550,000 bushels across wheat oats barley rye flax. Yields projected: wheat 25 bushels per acre, oats 35, barley 35, rye 18, flax 8.
The Riding and Duck Mountain Watershed Drainage Advisory Board elected Reeve John Potoski as chairman. The group includes reeves from Grandview Gilbert Plains Ethelbert Massey River Dauphin Qwier River Ste Rose McCreary and mayors of Dauphin Grandview and Ste Rose plus Gilbert Plains Winnipegosis. A motion urged the province to set up a permanent Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Act office in the watershed area.
J N McFadden K C a prominent Dauphin lawyer was elected 1951 president of the Manitoba Bar Association at a Winnipeg executive council meeting. Co S A Rogers K C was chosen to the executive council for the Dauphin Judicial district alongside McFadden.
Postmaster Cressey reports 81 548 letters passed through the Dauphin cancelling machine last week, up from 33 315 a year earlier, with Christmas mail expected to set a new record. He notes most mail goes out on schedule, praises public cooperation, and explains sorting difficulties without proper addressees. Parcel delivery expansion reduces lobby congestion though basement pickup remains required.

The Montreal Canadiens Juniors, last year's Dominion junior hockey champions and Memorial Cup holders, visit Dauphin for an exhibition against the Dauphin Kings on December 29. The touring junior squad will also appear in Brandon and Yorkton as part of their West tour, with expectations high for a strong, competitive game.
Dauphin Broadcasting plans to launch CKDM with tests and a 7 p.m. opening program led by Dr. M. Potoski. The event features live regional talent from Dauphin and surrounding districts, greetings from other stations, and a week named Dauphin Radio Week proclaimed by Mayor Bumore. The station will then move to regular hours with hourly news and entertainment as studios and offices near Third Avenue NE are completed.
Dauphin residents can enjoy two Big Six hockey games at the Dauphin arena with the Kings facing Souris on Friday and Brandon on Boxing Day. The arena offers extended skating hours on Christmas and Boxing Day from 2 to 4 pm and New Year’s Day 2:15 to 4 pm and 7 to 10 pm. Santa visits are planned with special times at the town hall for children, plus a Rose Ball on New Year’s Eve. Theatre offerings include matinees at Dauphin and Gay theatres and a New Year’s Eve preview of My Friend Irma starting 11:30 pm.
A limited open elk season is declared for a Manitoba area surrounding Riding Mountain National Park due to crop damage. Dec 18 to Jan 31. Licenses issued to farm residents with at least 40 acres. no hunting inside the park. 129 licenses issued by Dauphin municipal secretary-treasurer as of Monday.
Dauphin will host a seed show and a swine car cass competition during the annual short course week, March 26 to 30, 1951. A special Dauphin Agricultural Society committee led by J Hill and others announced the plan and noted a possible fat stock show around the first week of June 1951, with further announcements to follow.
