Dauphin's anti waste drive culminated last week with 17500 pounds of paper salvage collected by the Dauphin Salvage committee and the Colleg Salvage corps. The fall campaign also produced 50.58 dollars from scrap iron donated by town and rural residents.
The Dauphin Navy recruiting board interviewed 22 applicants this week and signed up exactly half for active naval service. Lieut. D. C. Mackintosh cited insufficient education as the main hurdle, with minimum grade ten preferred and grade nine as the bare minimum. Five applicants failed the medical test conducted by Lieut. James G. Fyfe, while nine were medically fit for service, including F. J. Baggett, Donald G. King, Fred H. Seeley, Stewart R. Little, James N. Porter, Ross W. Ohryn, K. A. Hinn, Roy G. Edwards, and Perry R. McRoberts. Wm. Kuflay and Alex D. Robb were accepted pending final reports.
Lieut. T. M. McIlwraith announced a reserve squadron of the Fort Garry Horse to be formed in Dauphin at a Dauphin Rotary luncheon. Classes two nights weekly will train local youths in basic military skills and enable active service if desired, building a home defense nucleus. He warned remote locations are vulnerable and urged all Rotarians to inspire others with wartime ideals and stay prepared as lanterns kept lit.
The Herald reports residents stole gravel to build a path to the post office and were visited by the Town engineer who discussed the gravel cost.
Morton H. Dewis a CN R Dauphin Winnipegosis brakeman died after slipping beneath moving wheels of a train Monday near Winnipegosis. He died in Crerar hospital from shock after injuries to both legs. An inquest was held with Coroner Dr T F Malcolm presiding. Dewis resided at 393 Carlton Street Winnipeg. Funeral services and interment planned with Bullmore's Funeral Home Dauphin.
Dauphin and district residents respond to the Ask an Airman campaign by inviting RCA F airmen to spend Christmas at local homes. Legion supervisors J B Montgomery and R E Brown praise the generous town as many airmen cannot go home. Call Montgomery or Brown to volunteer seats for specific days and times.
A double page ad lists wool shawls cotton and pure covers crepe and Kay fabrics priced from 49 cents to 13.95 per item. Crepe satin flats and baby gifts feature discounts. Yardage includes silk satin materials and wool dress goods from 1.00 to 2.00 dollars per yard.
The agreement with the government to have the R C M P police the Town of Dauphin was approved, with a $4 000 annual cost and four constables. The town hall office will be used by the force, and equipment expenditures were approved. The council discussed sign insurance, nuisance ground lease nonrenewal, and a slaughterhouse removal notice. A dance fundraiser raised 91 for the Mobile Kitchen fund.
Local curlers start the week with season draws for women and men as Ab Gowanlock joins the Glenborough rink. Twenty rinks form in the men’s club by Wednesday with Les Kitson as secretary. eight rinks in the Ladies Curling club and a newly formed Farmer’s Curling club led by Jack Spurway. Rural curlers set up for Saturday afternoon play.

A new incentive to buy war savings stamps was introduced this week with stamp folders featuring festive gay Christmas design. Each folder comes with a greeting card for use with the gift certificate.
The cast of Paulson on Parade will be paid with the thanks of Britain's war babies after they raise more than 1,500 quarts of milk. All proceeds from the Monday Town hall revue go to the Kinsmen club of Canada national war fund to buy milk for British children.
