Dauphin Stores Announce Yuletide Hours and Holidays

By council proclamation Dauphin observes Tuesday December 27 as a public holiday. The Dauphin chamber of commerce retail merchants committee lists extended hours before Christmas with some stores open late December 22 and 23. Stores close early December 24 and 31, then close December 26 27 and January 2.

Civil Defence Outline at North Zone Meeting

Zone officer Ivan J Mault welcomed 53 attendees and outlined civil defence roles for three regional areas with headquarters at Portage la Prairie Brandon and Dauphin. Speakers described staffing, welfare reception in Dauphin, and duties for fire police and welfare services in event of attack.

CNR Names Hudson Bay Area Centre at Dauphin

Canadian National designates Northern Manitoba and northeast Saskatchewan as the Hudson Bay area in the new Prairie region. Edward S. Barker becomes head with Dauphin as headquarters, overseeing 1600 miles of track from Dauphin to The Pas and Churchill and including Lynn Lake, Thompson and Chisel Lake. Barker’s appointment follows lobbying by Dauphin officials and regional leaders.

Dauphin Named Hudson Bay Area HQ for CNR

J R McMillan announces Dauphin will be the administrative center for the new Hudson Bay area of Canadian National Railways with J Cooke named general manager of the Prairie region. The plan, effective Jan 1, includes expanded staff in The Pas and Dauphin and a reorganization aimed at integrating management of the system.

Ernest Love Wins Town Council Seat in By-Election

Ernest L. Love was elected to the town council with 886 votes out of 1,193 in a two candidate race defeating Adolph Gniazdoski who had 301 votes. Six ballots were rejected and turnout was 26.6 percent of 4 471 eligible voters. Love will be sworn in at the January council meeting for a two year term 1961-462 to fill the vacancy from the death of Councillor David E. McLean. This is Love’s first council term though he previously served two years on a school board.

Sunday Sports By-Law Enacted by Town Council

The Sunday sports by-law, approved by Dauphin electors on November 16, received final reading and enactment by town council on Thursday. The measure authorizes specific commercial Sunday sports events within the town limits.

St. Viator’s Church Blessed By Archbishop in Dauphin

Archbishop Pocock blessed the new St. Viator’s Church in Dauphin during a Sunday ceremony attended by more than 800 parishioners and dignitaries. The procession entered the church, followed by blessings of walls and altars, a pontifical mass, and a buffet supper in the auditorium. Local officials and clergy participated in the event.

Yuletide Library Hours Announced by Dauphin Library

The Dauphin Public Library posts holiday hours announced by librarian Mrs. K. Everall. It will close Christmas Eve at 5:30 and reopen at usual hours on Wednesday December 28. New Year’s Eve closing and a January 3 reopening follow.

Dauphin Flying Club Reports Top Safety Record in 1960

Dauphin Flying Club reported over 73 000 accident free miles flown in 1960. Cam Goodhand, retiring president, announced breakdowns for student training 30 006 miles, official flyings 5 000, casual flying 37 000, crediting members for high training standards. Membership stood at 47 with nine general and one executive meeting, average attendance 14. eight privately owned planes remain at Dauphin Municipal Airport. Continued on page 4 column 4.

Warnock elected Dauphin Bar Association president at annual dinner

A. T. Warnock QC was elected president of the Dauphin Bar Association at the annual dinner meeting at the Kings hotel on Monday November 28. Other officers elected include A. C. Matthews treasurer G. Pleasing Variety Features Band Concert

The collegiate auditorium hosted a festive winter concert by the Boys and Girls bands directed by George Zradicka with Vernon L. Watson and Jack Mc Murray assisting. The program showcased solos, baton routines, and a mix of classic and modern numbers highlighting progress in instrument mastery and stage presence.

Senior Citizens Annual Christmas Party Draws 202 Attendees

A Dauphin senior citizens Christmas party at Eleventh Avenue hall afternoon event sponsored by Local Council of Women and affiliates. 202 seniors registered. prizes announced for longest marriage, oldest residents, most grandchildren, and other fun categories. Speeches, entertainment, and community greetings followed with Santa and helpers.

Salvation Army Christmas Carolling Schedule

The Salvation Army begins its annual door to door carolling on Tuesday December 13 with further serenading on December 15 16 19 20 and 23. Carriers will identify themselves by red shield collecting boxes and the Christmas Cheer kettle will be on Dauphin streets December 16 17 23 and 24 supported by service clubs.
