The Christmas issue of the Daw Prin Herald is being prepared for distribution by Christmas. Businesses and organizations wishing to include greetings should contact the Herald advertising department immediately. Deadline for copy is Friday December 18.
Reserve seat season tickets go on sale with savings for local fans. Advance sale through Caughin Hockey Association and executive members. Open at DMCC arena office weekdays 2 10 5 30 pm and 7 9 pm. Opening game Kings vs Oak River Saturday Dec 12 at 9 15 pm in Dauphin.
Druck Mountain school division No 34 held a regular meeting in Winnipeg on Monday Dec 9. Architects Smith Carter Searle presented plans for new schools to be built in Ethelbert and Winnipegos. Inspectors visited Dauphin Ste Rose and Neepawa to review construction and planning. The division expects delivery of a four passenger bus this week.
The Eighth Avenue hall overflowed as the Golden Age group of the Dauphin Council of Women hosted its second annual Christmas party on December 7. Mayor Mobberley and civic leaders offered greetings. Santa distributed gifts to top sellers. attendees and seniors enjoyed carols, poetry, and a spring woodland backdrop beside a decorated tree.
Dauphin Chamber of Commerce sponsors a ninth annual light-up campaign with prizes for mass lighting, indoor or window displays, and animated silhouettes. Honorable mention reserved for commercial lighting. Judges inspect on Wednesday Dec. 23.
A dozen reproductions of famous French Impressionist paintings are shown at the collegiate and will travel to Henderson school before public viewing at the Dauphin public library. Artworks from Degas Sisley Monet Renoir and Moriset include explanatory cards and are loaned by the Winnipeg Art Gallery with support from the Canada Council.
Post office offers focal mail and out-of-town bundles labels to speed holiday handling. Residents should separate local from out of town mail, use proper containers, and avoid misplacing cards in first class bins. Deadlines for Canada regions are listed. keep orders to ensure timely overseas delivery. Postmaster and staff thank Dauphin and district for cooperation.
Citizens of Dauphin and surrounding districts praise the weatherman for cooperation during the Santa Claus parade. Despite cooler conditions, the week was pleasant and the Christmas spirit was strong across Manitoba.
The Town of Dauphin reports strong finances with a ready sale of 140000 six percent debentures at 92 75 per 100 par to A E Ames & Company amid robust tax collections up to October 3. Tax collection percentages rose from 74.12 in 1957 to 76.68 in 1959, while provincial debt and local improvement obligations are outlined with waterworks and civic administration debentures and reserves showing growth.
Dauphin council reframes its stance on TV coverage, stating it is not against television. It will forward letters to federal ministers and reached out to Flin Flon and The Pas leaders to support northern CBC coverage via microwave links.
The Royal Commission on Education in Manitoba urges a public education aim of forming capable free society members. It recommends in Grade 1 optional conversational French or German, stronger reading supervision, graded time allocations for junior high subjects, and a shift to History and Geography in Social Studies from Grade 5. In secondary schooling it proposes four basic paths Matriculation general vocational and other options with Grade 9 as decision year and accreditation abolished. The central course would stress descriptive over theoretical learning with lighter examinations and a two year terminal course.
The Royal Commission on Education submits 462 proposals for Manitoba reforms across curriculum teacher training and private school aid. The report names a hard core of academic subjects grade 12 entrance for teachers college by 1967 and departmental exams for grades 9 10 12. It recommends a provincial institute of technology and public funding for separate schools via a grants commission. The commission was led by Dr R MacFarland with noted members including Stefan Hansen Mrs Hortense Wood and Brother Joseph Hopkins. Public hearings spanned 29 days with 59 memoranda and 171 days of meetings.
Liquor Control Commission store at Dauphin and Winnipeg will be open during the yuletide season with hours from 11 am to 5 pm from December 19 to December 23 and 11 am to 6 pm on December 24 including municipal holiday. From December 28 to December 31 hours 11 am to 6 pm. stores closed on December 2, December 26 and January 2.
Continuation notes a Sunday band concert at Mackinville auditorium starting 8 40 p m. Conductor George Ardicka leads with Vic. Watson and Ray Presurka assisting. First and second bands plus stage band selections planned. Dauphin Majobelles also perform.
Yorkton Television Co. Ltd officials said tower and anchor foundations and a cement slab for the transmitter building on Baldy Mountain are finished. Early work aims to beat frost, enabling an earlier on air date for CKOS-TV.
