Seed Grain Shortage Presses Dauphin District Farmers

Dauphin district farmers face acute seed grain shortages as community groups seek municipal aid. The province says municipalities must determine needs, pass by laws, and secure funding, with provincial help possible. Meetings at Valley River and Halicz urged immediate municipal action to provide seed under the municipal act.

James W. McQuay Dies in Texas at 56

James W. McQuay former Valley River district resident died November 17 at his Bisa Texas home after malaria. Born in Proton Ontario 56 years ago he married Annie Mooney in Inverness Quebec in 1904. He farmed the Valley River area for 25 years before moving to Texas in 1921. He leaves wife two sons Alvin in Nebraska Clifford in California and daughter Mrs G H Bohkle in Nebraska plus one sister in Ontario. Burial was in Weslaw Texas.

Mrs L Silverwood Pioneer Resident Buried in Dauphin

Mrs Hannah Silverwood 72 lifelong Dauphin resident widow of Isaac Silverwood died Wednesday after a lingering illness. Born 1863 in Emeley England she moved to Canada with her family in 1906. Surviving are three sons Sidney Benjamin Ishmal and four daughters Mrs Frank Webb Mrs Chris Jenson Mrs Clif Baird and Mrs L Billard. Funeral Saturday at home with Rev Duncan Ritchie officiating. Interment Riverside cemetery pallbearers listed.

Police Court Plea Fines In Dauphin Gazetted Cases

John P Maksymetz of Gilbert Plains pleaded guilty to having liquor in a place not his residence and was fined 200 dollars with costs and one month hard labor. Peter Bechan received a 16 dollar fine or 15 days in jail for driving without a license. Mike Melinyk was fined 25 dollars or 15 days for transporting goods without a PSW certificate. Police hunt burglars who broke into cottages at Dauphin Beach.

Funeral rites held Friday for Mrs Gavin Strang

Funeral services were conducted at Dauphin United Church for Mrs Martha Strang widow of Gavin Strang pioneer farmer. She died at the family home two miles east of town after a fall last spring. Born Martha Lee in Zurich Ontario she moved West in 1881 marrying Strang in 1882 and settled in the Dauphin district. She leaves four sons and six daughters along with siblings in Ontario and Manitoba. Dr D K Burns led the service and burial followed at Riversides cemetery with pallbearers listed.

Hawkins Questions Final Court For Workmen’s Board

Robert Hawkins M.L.A. questioned the Workmen’s Compensation board as the final court of appeal from its own decisions. Hon. W. J. Major noted potential need for a fresh committee decision, while the original five year ago panel supported leaving the board as last appeal. The discussion contrasted Canadian practice with Britain's appeal routes.

Council Receives Notice of Street Accidents

A special council meeting held on Thursday November 27 discussed damage claims the operation of the electric light plant and fuel purchases. Letters from Bowman McFadden Ramsden notified accidents to W J Stephenson and Madame Marie Simons from falls on town streets. Communications referred to the town solicitor.

Rotary appeals to aid Dauphin children in need

Dauphin Manitoba Rotarians urge citizens to donate clothing footwear and underwear to help school children in the rural municipality who cannot attend or should not attend without proper attire. Boxing Day Declared Holiday in Manitoba

An order in council signed by Lieutenant Governor W J Tupper proclaims Boxing Day December 26 a public holiday in Manitoba. Legislation to establish it as a general holiday was passed during the 1934 legislative session.

Sunday Concert Aids Children's Aid Society In Dauphin

More than 600 attended the Sunday concert at the Dauphin Theatre to support the Children's Aid Society. About $88.20 was raised from the silver collection and a town drive added an estimated $260.00. The event featured Miss Dorothy Mudge and others with Miss Mary Hamilton directing, and Mayor D. D. McDonald spoke on the society’s needs and reduced provincial funding.
