In 1942 the Canadian National Railways carried 71,545,237 tons of freight averaging 443.49 miles per ton, totaling 31,729,325,493 ton miles. To illustrate scale, that mass equals about 1,269,173 Earth circumferences. A 40 car train at 20 mph would need 109 years nonstop to move it all.
Word received by Lieut and Mrs. B. Shewfelt confirms that Flying Officer Harold Shewfelt has arrived safely overseas. His wife is stated to reside in Neepawa.
Several Dauphin residents migrate on short leaves visiting Winnipeg Saskatoon Vancouver and England. Names include Mrs T J Mackinon Mrs D McDonald L Davis Vernice Craig Arnold Tuthill Evelyn Skeene Bertha King Ina Cameron and others. The report notes fly ing officers and RC A F personnel spending leave with families and the retirement presentation for Wm Voss at Manco Creamery.
Newborns welcomed across families with four births noted. Frank Cammer and his wife welcome a son on November 30. Gordon and wife greet a daughter on November 30. Eli and spouse from Ste. Rose du Lac welcome a daughter on November 30. Geo Danzinger and wife at No. 10 SFTS welcome a son on December 1.
The Local Council of Women met with 32 members present at the Town naki Rest room on Monday evening November 22. Mrs. E. N. McGirr convened. Rev. J. A. Berridge urged lifelong education, stronger links between kindergarten and school, and greater adult learning. Miss M. Howe shared reflections from a Trois Pistoles summer school experience and an idealized old Quebec town.
In Winnipeg on November 19, Horace J. Atkin of Dauphin and Edith Kent of Vancouver married. Dr. J. A. Cormie officiated. The couple plans to reside in Dauphin.
Professor John Williamson aged 68 died after a prolonged illness in Dauphin General hospital on Saturday. Funeral services were held at Bullmore's Funeral Home with Rev J A Berridge officiating and burial in Riverside cemetery. Survived by wife Margaret Younger in Scotland, four daughters Mrs A K King Fork River Betty Dauphin Mary Edinburgh Lesley with the WRENS overseas, and son James with the Eighth Army in Italy, plus one brother George in Scotland.
Mrs. Sarah Ann Herrick aged 89 of Dauphin died at her daughter Mrs. Blanche Hobday’s home on Sunday. Funeral services were held at Bulmore's Funeral Home on Tuesday with Archdeacon H. E. Bridgett officiating and interment in Riverside cemetery. She leaves three daughters, one son, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The 1942 Canadian National Railways served 3 607 105 meals in dining and buffet cars, averaging nearly 10 000 daily across the year. Adam Justice, longtime Dauphin resident, died at his home on Friday November 26. The Rev J A Berridge led funeral services at Bullmore's on Sunday. Burial followed at Riverside cemetery.
