CNR Opens New Line to Serve Northern Mines

The Canadian National Railway will open a new 52 mile line from Optic Lake to Chisel Lake in northern Manitoba with special ceremonies Friday. J J Charles will drive the last spike as the line near completion ties into northern mining operations. That day the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company starts its Snow Squall Lakes mine with ore first car routed to Flin Flon for processing via the new line.

Ken Ganezar Wins Two University Bursaries

Ken Ganzear son of Mr. is awarded a $350 Government of Manitoba bursary and a $200 University Board of Governor's bursary. He plans science studies, majors in chemistry, and will enter the University of Manitoba when term begins. He previously won the Governor-General's medal at DCTI graduation and Rotary and Chartered Accountants prizes. He played badminton, ping-pong, and curling, winning the school spiel rink.

CNR Reorganization May Shift Dauphin From Northern Area

Local officials hear hints CNR will place northern Manitoba supervision in The Pas as the Hudson Bay area within the Prairie region. Dauphin may be integrated with Winnipeg area administration amid staged changes to avoid employment disruption, per Don Gordon CNR chair.

Radar Speed Checking Demonstration by RCMP Unit

Manitoba RCMP demonstrated the new radar speed checking system. Inspector John Stevenson led the session with the "little green box" device mounted on an unmarked patrol car. The apparatus records vehicle speeds and can relay the data to a distant patrol car for enforcement actions. Sgt. Malloy noted the radar patrol aims to deter speeding rather than act as a scare device.

Rural schools begin fall term in Dauphin Ochre area

The 1960-61 opening Day marks start of fall term for 26 rural one room schools in the Dauphin Ochre area as Durston Halley and Mountview close in consolidation. Earlier reductions reduced from 32 to 30 with Spruce Creek and Wilson River exits. Carrick closure followed.

The Dauphin Collegiate and Technical Institute reports June departmental exam results for 1958 1959 and 1960. Principal Norris Aitken notes improvements in mathematics history and French overall with 12th grade physics showing the highest failure rate at 51.3 percent and chemistry failing rates mixed by grade.

Tom Love Receives Medical Scholarship After Stellar College Career

Colorado College hockey player Tom Love, 22, graduates with a geology degree and earns a Pomar Foundation scholarship to the University of Colorado for medical studies. He held Blue Key and Phi Beta Kappa honors, won the Van Diest medal, led as senior class president, joined Delta Epsilon, and appeared in Who's Who. He is married to Judy Prucell of Hampton Iowa, with one daughter.

Dauphin General hospital ends its 59 year nursing program with graduation exercises for the 1960 class. Six graduates from Edger ton Alberta Leask Saskatchewan Reston Saskatchewan Garrick Saskatchewan and Woodworth will receive diplomas at a service at the Dauphin First United church. Firms Seek Saturday Noon Closing For Retail Shops

Rotary Club to Furnish Children's Ward at Hospital

The Dauphin Rotary Club plans to equip a children's ward with proceeds from the Rotary-O to be held at the DMCC on August 31.

Commonwealth President Visits Dauphin With Parliamentary Group

Forty two members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association arrived by TransAir in Dauphin as part of Manitoba Manitoba tour. The group included both provincial and federal parliament members plus one senator J Wesley Stambaugh. They toured Mount View Durston and Rainbow Beach development then viewed MCC industrial building arena and Mackay Indian residential school. Dinner at La Verendrye hosted by Dauphin town and chamber of commerce with remarks by Stewart McLean and Fimer Forbes.
