General Ridgway’s staff sensed the Chinese and North Korean leaders wanted to continue talks. Harry Eccles pressed for a halt to armistice suspensions and proposed direct meetings to seek a reasonable agreement with Kim Il Sung and Gen Pen Teh Huai.
Gen Marshall, first American to open the CNE, was introduced by Canada’s defence minister Brooke Claxton. Claxton said Canada and the United States share a single aim in national and international spheres the establishment of peace and world security against Soviet influence and global aggression.
Communists offer to resume cease fire talks in Korea if Gen. Ridgway admits a U N bombed Kaesong site during armistice negotiations on Aug 22. Ridgway says the charge is false and no Allied plane was near. A spokesman says the Communists may continue or break off talks. U N commander ready for either path.
U.N. forces retreated about two miles north of Yanggu as fighting surged across eastern Korea on Tuesday. Communist attacks exploited rain to challenge U.N. units and hamper air operations amid scattered engagements.
Britain and Iran break down again over oil nationalization as Premier Mossadegh faces renewed parliament elections. Unemployment and business slump grow as oil revenues wane, raising tensions with opponents of Mossadegh and critics of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.
The Senate received a large foreign aid bill totaling 7.535 billion dollars. The measure, approved by the Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees, includes 6.013 billion in military aid and 1.522 billion in economic assistance for Western European nations in the North Atlantic pact and allied powers.
The 17th annual Dauphin Horticultural Society show drew 55 exhibitors and 568 entries at the DMCC industrial hall over two days. Cut flowers led with 297 entries, while vegetables fell to 119. Special cups recognized champions across divisions with Edith Durston winning the Dauphin Herald rose bowl in children’s sections and Cliff Robertson taking cut flowers honors for the second year. Lions Club shield went to M rs. M. Sytnick as fruit champion for the fifth straight year.
The Dauphin district endured cool damp weather with a weekly high of 78.8 degrees last Wednesday and a low of 46.0 on the same day. Rainfall totaled .42 inches across Thursday through Sunday, while year-ago figures show a stronger July week with a 75.6 high and 31.4 low on nearby dates.
Water samples from Lake Dauphin remain unsafe for swimming or drinking. Tests showed initial toxicity to rats and mice, but after algae filtration the filtrate was not toxic. Health officials urge the public to stay out of the lake and keep animals away until readings improve.
The Dauphin town council gave first reading Monday night to a by law establishing an annual levy not to exceed half a mill for a boys and girls band. The by law goes to the municipal and public utility board for approval and, if approved, voter approval comes at the fall municipal elections.
The rural municipality council authorized over-expenditure of 50 000 for 1951 to be repaid over five years, with 16 000 from the general reserve and the rest borrowed. Reeve Pototski and secretary-treasurer Szewczyk were sent to Winnipeg to confer with the municipal commissioner and the premier, with a report due next meeting. The council also urged the Department of Public Works to improve the Wilson River under the same terms as Mink River and Edwards Creek projects, the municipality paying one sixth of the cost.
Dauphin Memorial and Community Centre progresses with by law closing Second Avenue SE Third and Fourth Avenues SE and several lanes to define the site. Council approved transfers, funding, and pipeline changes while preparing foundations and steel tender plans for the new arena.
Town engineer Ed Lundman reported an estimated 7706 dollar cost to build a heating unit for the town hall including building stack stoker 10 ton bin boiler and installation and contingencies. The council also discussed a 30 horsepower boiler coal bin capacity plans insurance analyses and other municipal projects.
Dauphin town council passed a motion urging the provincial government to keep rent control in effect. The discussion outlined rent control’s 1941 origin and 1949 amendments cutting many units from coverage, with citizens split in a straw vote on continuing the policy.
A department of transport official urged the town council Monday to extend Gladys Street north to meet Second Avenue Northwest through the former skating rink property. The council did not decide but considered filling the vacant lot with ashes this winter for potential later use.
Dissatisfaction over a delayed cement contract emerged at the Dauphin town council meeting. The Monarch Lumber Co. was awarded a 3,200 bag contract at $1.04 per bag in March, but 1,245 bags remain undelivered. The council urged delivery of 245 sacks by Sept 7 and the remaining 1,000 as soon as possible to complete planned town projects.
Dauphin-Ochre School Area No 1 lists 15 new teachers for four schools for 1951 52 term. New staff at Dauphin Collegiate and Technical Institute include Peter Caruk Margaret Nelson and Ida J Patterson alongside returning principals and teachers. Henderson Smith-Jackson Whitmore staff see multiple new instructors across grades and junior high.
Sixty nine rural schools reopen Tuesday for the 1951 52 term with 39 schools opening and 16 new teachers assigned. Several schools keep the same instructors from last year while others see transfers and new hires across the Dauphin Ochre area.
Three new teachers join the B group staffs as the Dauphin Ochre school area opens for 1951-52. At Makinmak school Miss Mabel Giesel returns as principal with Mrs Olga Didyk as new teacher. Ochre River retains Mrs E A Lysack. Sifton welcomes James N Stanko as principal with John Focunee and Pauline Get The new staff member is Sister M Alfred.
