The Dauphin region records a cool period with an occasional hot day and 4.16 inches of rain over two weeks, plus 1.35 inches more last night. Harvest is delayed four days or more if clouds persist, with moisture causing weathering in seeds and possible sprouting in crops.
The Dauphin Horticultural Society held its 28th annual Garden Show at the DMCC exhibit building on August 24. Sixty exhibitors entered 892 exhibits, up 279 from last year, with new exhibitors and strong judging praise from Stan Gugin and Mrs. D. Jackson of Minnedosa for flower arrangements and Burke McNeill of Skinner's Nursery for vegetables. The north hall displays were fully filled, signaling need for more space, and trophies again went to first-time winners, boosting local interest. Mayor Harold J. Mottberley delivered greetings at the presentation.
Hon. Walter Weir announced amendments to the Highway Traffic act making it unlawful to throw litter on highways. Penalties up to 25 dollars apply. The changes took effect May 1. Manitoba highways branch placed 12 litter containers along the Trans-Canada highway and McGillivray boulevard to keep thoroughfares tidy.
J Randle McLachlan of the Virden Empire Advance hosted the Canadian Weekly Newspapers association convention in Winnipeg. He showcased a carved butter buffalo to CWNA officials Charles Nolan and Janis Evans, highlighting Manitoba dairy products and provincial honey gifts from Dauphin Valley Bee Keepers Association.
The Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association seeks a Canada Council grant to microfilm back files of all weekly papers in Canada. A CWNA convention in Winnipeg urged a fund for provincial microfilming programs and regional histories of the weekly press. High costs and past fires threaten archival losses. a 100-year archive would require about 6,900 issue photographs.
Don Fisher won the Dauphin Herald Rose Bowl for championship in the children’s section. Dor e Tieher took the Mrs. James A. Maynard trophy and a $5 donation for most points in the junior section. Mrs. J. A. Boles secured the McFadden Memorial and the Rotary Service Club Cup with 66 points. Mrs. Gwen Robinson earned the Lions Club Shield in fruits. Mrs. I. A. Boles dominated flowers and related prizes. Mrs. B. C. Goodhand won several special prizes including driftwood arrangements and nursery stock. multiple exhibitors earned ribbons, bulbs, and prize credits across flowers, fruits, vegetables, gladiolus, canning, and flower arranging.
The death of Councillor James Anderson at 57 last Thursday shocked Dauphin and ends his 17th year in office as chair of the public works committee. This marks the fourth council member death in three years, following James S. Oliphant Jr on Aug 28, 1959, David E. McLean on Nov 8, 1960, and Ernest L. Love on Nov 29, 1961.
Six weeks into enforcing new rules at Dauphin collegiate the area board reports progress in reducing failing grades. Board chair W T Volkers says cooperation from students teachers parents and public is strong though some apply tardily for permission to enroll after failing subjects.
Dauphin Collegiate and Technical Institute prepares for the 1962 63 school year with 39 teachers on duty next Tuesday and registrations projected to exceed 900. Principal N G Aitken lists assignments across departments including French history science literature geography and shop subjects for grades 7 through 12.
Mrs. Peter Kiez topped the 590-entry gladiolus show with a record spike. Second went to Mrs. G. Strang and Margaret Richardson won third. Mrs. Norman Nantais and Mrs. Len Richardson received fourth and honorable mentions. Mrs. B. C. Goodhand led the one-sided arrangement class with over 15 entries, followed by Miss Lil Esplen and Mrs. I. A. Boles in other prizes. Honorable mentions went to Mrs. E. N. McGirr and Mrs. J. A. Jamieson. The all-around arrangement class saw Mrs. B. C. Goodhand win. second went to Mrs. S. E. Burr, third to Mrs. E. N. McGirr, fourth to Mrs. I. A. Boles, with honorable mentions to Mrs. A. M. Roy and Miss Lil Esplen. The show featured a record 94 exhibits plus many baskets and vases, drawing new exhibitors and heightened interest in gardening and flower arranging.

Gordon Hjalmarson, former Dauphinite resident now in Ojai California, rose from grade school winner of the Macneill medal to editor in chief of the science and mathematics division at Houghton Mifflin in Boston. He earned a BSc in pre medicine and a masters in mathematics and began teaching in Huntington Beach before moving to publishing.
Manitoba surveyors appeal to farmers to safeguard the extreme north east corner and half mile line of every section. Markers at corners and half mile lines include wooden posts iron tubes mounds pits or concrete posts and should not be defaced. Damaging or removing them triggers possible resurvey costs to the province or landowners and is a common problem.
