Seven states faced disaster with deaths and billions in damage as Hurricane Diane swelled rivers and knocked out water and power. Dikes failed, bridges collapsed, and thousands fled homes while crews airlifted aid and evacuees from flooded towns.
After a public meeting Friday the Killarney Shamrocks decided to withdraw from the Big Six league citing high operating costs. Last year expenses approached $25 000 leaving about $3 000 still owed to be paid. rumors said Melville and Yorkton bids would raise costs. The Day-Kings Brandon Wheat Kings and Minnedosa Jets remain, while the Elks left earlier this summer.
A new $60 000 propane installation will be built in Dauphin to serve northern Manitoba. Construction starts soon with a showroom and cylinder dock on an acre near No 10 highway. K Kimberley of Canadian Propane (Man.) Ltd. names M M Sawchuk and Dr. Hughes as local representatives for a district survey and project rollout.
Outside of a trace of rain on Saturday the only rainfall this week was .74 inches Tuesday night. Temperatures were generally mild with a high of 86? degrees on August 17 and a lower high than last year. The low maximum differed by over 10 degrees from the prior year, with a weekly low around 71.8 degrees versus 61.6 degrees.
The area board approved a new bus fare schedule shaping fall charges with higher rates for multiple children from a single family. Extensions include extending west and north routes and a new Ukraina to Sifton route serving about 12 pupils. Additional actions cover bus driver medicals, tenders for routes, projectors, oil for terms, and a piano purchase for Ochre River.
Principal Norris Aitken released results showing 82.47 percent pass rate from 5 526 papers for the 1954 55 term. Total passes 4 557. failures 969. Fakre rate 17.53 percent, below provincial 19.3 percent. Grade X up 5.3 percent. IX down 4.1 percent. XII down 43 percent. technical years mixed.
Mayor William L. Bullmore of Dauphin says he will retire as mayor at the end of his present term ending December 31. He notes 12 years on council and 10 years as mayor, plus two years in the provincial legislature since 1953. He was born in Minnedosa in 1912 and moved to Dauphin in 1938.
Students in the Dauphin Ochre School Area are reminded school bells will ring. Rural schools start Monday August 29 while Dauphin town schools and those at Makinak Ochre River and Sifton open Thursday September 1. Full details appear in page 5 advertisement.
Howard Campbell president of the Dauphin Agricultural Society will officially open the 21st annual Dauphin Horticultural Society garden show Friday at 8 p.m. in the D.M.CC. industrial hall. Mayor W. L. Bullmore and Reeve John Potoski will greet attendees. A new driftwood arrangements class and allowed figurines appear in the flower section. The Mrs James Maynard trophy for top junior points debuts. New trophies include a championship in the cut flowers class and a new McFadden and McLean cup replacing the Boseman, McFadden and Carmichael cup.
The Dauphin Horticultural Society named winners in six classes from 33 entries. Howard E. Derick won the Mayor Baltimore cup for best kept home grounds. E W Riddell led the town landscape design. Mrs Lorne Nicholson led rural home beautification. Neil Houston won the Sneath trophy for best kept grounds open to veterans. multiple residents earned top prizes in farm vegetable and garden competitions. The society president noted growing competition and interest.
The second Churchill excursion reports 215 total visitors with 39 Canadians, led by Ontario and Manitoba representatives. Ohio State President Dr. Howard L. Bevis hosted a reception and invited all excursionists to Ohio’s 81,000 seat stadium. Local guests included Indiana and New York attendees, with remarks on local news interest and a nod to longtime participants the Hamburgers.
The Canadian National Railway will send the safety instruction car to Dauphin on Monday August 29 under safety supervisor J Campbell for the Manitoba district. A series of films on preventing injuries to railway staff will start at 10 am at the rear of the station for staff in bridge and building train engine yard freight shed station express car department and motive power. The train is due in Dauphin Saturday morning.
The second gladiolus show at Hotel Dauphin drew 23 entries with A J Schmiedl sweeping five classes and amassing 15 points to win. Mrs D A Brown took second with eight points. L Espien and D G Dent followed. Espien won first prize for violet charmelight gladiolus. Brown took other prizes including a pink Tivalli and a Rajah rose. Mentions of show officials E F Treendle, C H L Snyder, Ed Osborne, and C A Gray.
Dave Hill reports rapid harvest of grain under ideal weather with good storage prospects. Wheat likely No 2 or No 3 Northern. barley yields poor due to wet conditions and diseases. oats fair with rust concerns on Rodney Exeter and Ajax Gut. flax fair and sweet clover yields expected despite delayed harvest. Farmers face market timing uncertainty due to no crop quota yet.
