Missing Aircraft Down In Park

A Cevene 172 aircraft rented from Winnipeg Flying Club was seen near Riding Mountain Nations Park. The pilot, after engine trouble, flew to Brandon then Dauphin where he spoke with a Dauphin Flying Club pilot. He reported engine issues and departed toward an unknown destination with about three and a half hours fuel.

Dauphin Welcomes Churchill Excursionists With Warm Reception

A Dauphin civic reception greeted Churchill excursionists upon their arrival last Friday on a sunny fall afternoon. Melissa Farr of Rochester stole attention as the youngest tourist, receiving flowers and a bouquet for traveling far. Guests were given brochures and place mats of Dauphin, maps, and a Manitoba pin while local officials saluted the travelers and offered tours of the town.

Four Juveniles Have Licences Held In Dauphin Court

Four Dauphin juveniles had licenses held by the Probation Officer for one to three months after Highway Traffic Act infractions mainly careless driving. Judge E W Hawkins presided over a heavy session with 19 juveniles in total for various delinquency offenses. Three youths involved in wilful damage to sprinkling equipment were given two months suspended sentences and restitution of $65 each.

Record Heat Marks Summer as Temps Hit 100

The weatherman notes extreme heat with a 100 degree reading on Wednesday August 16 setting a new local record for the date. A scorching wind added to discomfort while the night cooled to within eight degrees of freezing on August 18, hinting at possible early frosts.

Fire Dangers Serious In This Area In Manitoba

The Herald reports 30 fires burning in Manitoba all under control. Forestry officials impose forest travel restrictions in the Duck and Porcupine mountains. Campers and tourists must stay on main roads and camp only at organized grounds at Childs Blue Singoosh Wellman lakes and Bell Steenrock. No campfires permitted and travelers urged to be careful. The Duck Mountain fire started Aug 16 around noon with high heat and southwest winds. by Thursday morning it had burned about 4000 acres and moved little since.

Community development officer named for Camperville and Duck Bay

Joseph M. Dufour will assume duties as community development officer for Camperville and Duck Bay on Sept. 1. He will establish headquarters at Camperville and work to assess local needs and coordinate with government agencies to promote economic projects and community organization.

121 Teachers Staff Area Schools For 1961 62 Term

The Dauphin Ochre Area school system opens the fall term with 121 teachers across the district. Staffing includes 36 at Dauphin composite high school, 53 in four elementary schools, 22 in village and rural one room schools, plus a list of named staff and subject assignments for junior high and elementary faculty. The opening day is Tuesday Sept 5 and registration details appear on page five of The Herald.

Rural School Openings Adjusted for 22 Schools

School openings set for next Tuesday but only 22 rural systems operate this year. Four closures reduce the count from 26 last year including Banks, Burrows Ferresy and Old Dauphin. Some village schools start Sept 5 with Dauphin, while Siltol loses its secondary classes.
