Winnipeg police chase ends in mistaken car theft report

A Winnipeg man reported his runabout stolen from the Bank of Nova Scotia on a Sunday. A police chase found a car matching the description, but it turned out the three occupants were telephonists who had taken a car by mistake. Explanations followed and the owner was satisfied.

F E Simpson K C Appointed Judge in Northern Manitoba

Announcement from Ottawa on August 21 reports the appointment of Frank E. Simpson K C as judge of the Northern Judicial District of Manitoba replacing Judge Mallison who resigned. Simpson, a Dauphin resident and longtime Liberal, has held multiple legal posts and was made King’s Counsel in 1920.

Weekend collision spree swells Dauphin casualty list

A string of weekend automobile accidents on Ashville Road and surrounding streets left one Nash destroyed, a Chevrolet and a Ford badly damaged, and several injuries. Witnesses say the Ford may have been abandoned after breaking down and driven into by the Chevrolet driver. Cliff Clark and Cliff Stelck escaped with minor injuries after their Nash overturned in loose gravel and caught fire. Mrs. A Durston sustained leg injuries after a collision at Burrows and Main. Traffic control at the plant intersection was hampered by lights being out. The silent policeman at 2nd and Vermilion N.W. is undergoing repairs after being knocked out again.

The advisory committee released the summer school exam results. Dauphin students posted strong showings across subjects including English, Germania, 18th Century Literature, Algebra, Geometry, Economics, French Authors, and Chemistry. Notable names include Norma Malcolm, Beth Crowe, Norah Molson, John F. Wilson, and Jack G. Crowe with multiple term marks.

Jimmy Ball Breaks Irish Record at Tailteann Games

Jimmy Ball of Dauphin won the 200 metres at Dublin Tailteann Games on August 17, defeating John Fitzpatrick of Hamilton and Harry Warren of Vancouver. Ball clocked 21.35 seconds and added a 220 yard run to shave a fifth of a second off the Irish mark. Canadians also won the 1.2 metre relay and Dr. Patrick O Callaghan threw the hammer 170 feet 1 inch to take first.

Dauphin Men Injured In Rail Wreck Near Benito

Two Dauphin men C Ward and L Clyde were treated at a local clinic after a gas car derailed between Durban and Benito Manitoba on Friday. Ten passengers were thrown as the car struck loose gravel dumped on the track. Another Dauphin man E Paiment was cared for at Swan River hospital.

Bear Shot After Farm Call Near Lake

Carl McMillan phoned for help to dispatch a wounded bear on his farm near the lake. Archie Chute Frank McEwan F Howell and H Green joined the effort. Guided by McMillan they tracked the wounded bear and killed it, an immense brown aged creature weighing about 600 pounds.

Mrs J E Delmage of Dauphin captures the Western Canada ladies singles title at Moose Jaw Sask after a hard final against Regina's Mrs Fenstrin by scores 3 4 6 2 6 4. In mixed doubles Delmage and K C Rappell of Assiniboia finish second to D McKenzie and A J Wickens in two straight 6 2 6 4. Delmage also holds the Manitoba Grass Courts open singles and open doubles championships.

Kildonan Repeats Finalists in Manitoba Junior Title Playoffs

In Winnipeg Kildonan defeats Wanderers to reach the Manitoba Junior final against Dauphin Rangers. The Labor Day game will be at the Fair Grounds under Elks auspices with carnival access included. A second playoff series advances with weekly Tuesday and Saturday games.
