Auto Crash Injures Dauphin Teens. Driver Charged

Two 18 year old Dauphin girls were hospitalized after a car failed to negotiate a siren and crashed into a ditch near town limits. Walter Warbeck, 22, faced drunken driving charges and bail was posted. Am 15 year old Amelia Kaleta and 16 year old Amelia Rzesnoski suffered cuts. The car sustained about 500 dollars in damage. The report mentions an upcoming fall golf tourney at Dauphin Golf and Country Club on Aug 30.

Dauphin Grain Deliveries Fall Despite Extended Year

Dauphin elevators received 1 309 095 bushels in 1952-53, down from 1 567 064 the prior year, despite an extension to Aug 14 for barley wheat and oats. Wheat and barley led cuts. flax oats and rye also declined. Grain in storage rose to 234 249 bushels with 530 000 capacity, aided by car shortages. A new wheat board policy sets a base 500 bushels per farmer and three bushels per acre above that.

Gladiolus Show Honors Taken By A J Schmiedl

A J Schmiedl swept four of five prizes in the Saturday gladiolus contest to win the 1953 championship with 26 points. D A Craig placed second with 10 points, while Ed Osborne Mrs L Nicholson and E W Hawkins trailed. Final judging counted 28 entries from six exhibitors.

Big Flood Work Program Proposed For Area In'53

J A Griffiths provincial drainage engineer announced a 111 000 flood control program for Dauphin Gilbert Plains and Ethelbert to be undertaken with municipal and dominion funds. The plan covers For wards Creek Mink Creek and Wilson River drains with Edwards Creek receiving 38000 and Wilson River 63000. Dominion pays 50 percent and province 33 percent, municipalities cover the rest. Dauphin to contribute 11670 Gilbert Plains 6466 and Ethelbert 354. Right of way may be municipal responsibility.

Temperatures Reach Week Highs and Light Rainfall

The past week saw a high of 86.2 degrees last Wednesday and near-peak 84.7 this Tuesday. A low of 43.0 occurred Sunday, with the warmest nightly minimum at 55.2 Wednesday. Traces of rain were noted last Wednesday, with .04 inch measured Monday, the heaviest in two weeks.

Sleeping Sickness Reported In District

About five cases of sleeping sickness in horses in the Dauphin area have been reported in the past three weeks. Dr. G Sveinson veterinarian stated Wednesday. He said more cases likely exist but the disease is not reportable, making exact estimates difficult.

Manitoba to announce new crop loss policy next week

Manitoba farmers in flood areas may gain an amended Prairie Farmers Assistance Act to cover unseeded acreage. Hon. R. D. Robertson says changes aimed at immediate benefit are under discussion and will be public early next week. No individual compensation details have been released and the municipality awaits provincial guidance.

Paralysis Reported in Dauphin Polio Case

Dauphin General Hospital reports its second polio case, a 10 year old girl from the rural municipality, with paralysis confined to one leg. Dr. C C Wright confirms gamma globulin given and serum provided to all close contacts.

Society Receives Grant for Fair Grounds Move

The Dauphin Agricultural Society received the fourth federal grant of 10000 dollars for the fair ground move. The yearly grant, under a Canadian Department of Agriculture agreement, covers one third of costs with the plan running ten years for a total of 100000 dollars. 1952 work included grounds improvements, a livestock arena, and two other buildings on the new grounds.

Manitoba Teachers Tour Dauphin Sparks Crossborder Views

About 19 teachers from State Teachers College Trenton New Jersey visited Dauphin Manitoba on a three hour stop as part of a geography course. They toured town sites exchanged views with locals and received honorary citizenship papers and local pamphlets.
