Six day distribution period runs from August 23 to August 28 with a Dauphin auditorium centre open 10 am to 5 pm for local citizens and rural residents. Dr McDonald and W J Henderson head the distribution, and residents must present properly completed cards for each book. No 2 books must be kept and not turned in.
Dauphin citizens have gathered items for HMCS Dauphin including darts and boards, books for leisure, jive records, punching gear, coat hangers and toiletries. The local committee led by Mrs. Robt Hawkins and Coun. 8. Solomon seeks larger equipment like electric irons and percolators, preferring 110 volt DC. Seamen’s socks sweaters and mitts are also requested for ship’s recreation and comfort.
A miniature cyclone last Thursday ripped through the mountain area a few miles from Moon Lake, uprooting numerous trees and leaving a damaged landscape in its wake.

Lightning struck the Waite farm home one mile north of the Spruce Creek community hall late Wednesday night, burning the dwelling to the ground. The house had just been redecorated after a lightning strike last year caused beds to be flooded with fear of a repeat event. No insurance was carried.
A coroner's jury found 15 month old Eileen Lucking died Saturday afternoon after being struck by a gravel truck driven by Peter Toews of Lovering park. No one blamed. body found in Toews' driveway before six. Funeral held in Elkhorn Anglican church.
A Herald inquiry finds 90 percent of Dauphin residents with coal orders and fuel concerns rising. Coal supply, wood scarcity, rising wood prices, and timber access shape a tight winter outlook. The Wartime Prices board notes slight wood supply improvement amid fewer active dealers and contracted inventories.
Wartime Prices and Trade board announces a one third increase in tea and coffee rations starting September 2 with new ration books. Each person will receive 5 13 ounces of coffee or 1 13 ounces of tea per week and coupon value remains the same. If shipping stays favorable, a further increase may come before year end.
The Dauphin Lions club seeks names of all town and rural residents in the armed forces for a large honour roll to be placed at Fourth Avenue and Main Street N.W. Send full name rank and service status of local men and women, overseas or in Canada, including discharged captured missing or killed. The roll will be 32 by 16 feet with 16 inch name tabs. Also note Fort Garry Horse has received new Universal Carrier and trucks, stirring reserve troops.
Town council forms a fuel inquiry panel led by Justice Marsh and Hutchison to assess winter needs and consider building a wood reserve. Officials discuss licensing dealers, surveying past consumption, and potential emergency stock releases to prevent shortages.

An instructor and a student pilot from No. 10 S.F. T.S. died when their training aircraft crashed near the station during night flying operations on August 11. Both victims were Australians and their identities were not released at the time.
Barry Richards of Sherridan swept the provincial by election at The Pas on August 17. Richards representing the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation led from the first polls and finished with 3477 votes while McIsaac 1249 Wright 522 and Mainwaring 396. Final counts reflected an outright CC F win with government and Liberal candidates failing to overtake.
Today at 2 p.m. the Ukrainian People's Home of Dauphin hosts a big picnic at the fair grounds to support the Savings war drive. Tug of war, kids races, bingo, baseball and girls softball are on the schedule with cash prizes and war savings prizes. Evening dancing features Johnny Johnston's Orchestra.
