An early NATO estimate put Soviet and Eastern bloc forces over 6 million trained for war. Police across Britain were alerted over the weekend amid unrest reports and regional security concerns ahead of treaty deadlines.
The Churchill excursion for the 19th annual tour will visit Dauphin this Friday from 2 30 p m to 6 p m with a civic reception at the CN R station gardens. Mayors, MLAs and chamber officials will give welcomes while IODE serves refreshments and tours of farms lake Riding Mountain park and grain elevators are popular stops.
A Dauphin based company led by A T Warnock announces start of construction on a CKDM transmitter. The program includes local performers and musical entertainment. Officials expect the official switchover in mid October.

Wyatt Construction of Winnipeg submitted the lowest bid of 723 862 dollars for the Mackay Indian Residential school project to be built on the old fairgrounds site. The federal government through Indian Affairs will fund the project in Ottawa, with equipment costs not included in the contract price and a total near 1 000 000 dollars expected.

The Dauphin fire department was alerted Friday at about 7 30 p.m. to a fire at the third floor Whitmore school fire escape door. It was extinguished quickly. source of the fire unknown. The R C M P is investigating. The area board will replace the door with a steel door at Monday night meeting.

Councillors discuss frontage taxes and district voting limits, deeming road work more urgent while awaiting cost details.
Rural council of Dauphin at its regular meeting last week authorized each councillor to hire road-building equipment for work in his ward but limited expenditures to ward appropriations. They also outlined road and bridge work with estimated costs and charged items to bridges and ward funds.
Dauphin R C M P reports a head on collision near Ste Rose involving Rene Gendreau and Alois Hoffman. No injuries. Damages approx 400 dollars to Gendreau and 200 dollars to Hoffman.
The Dauphin Horticultural Society schedules its 21st annual garden show for Friday and Saturday August 26 and 27 at the D.M.C.C Industrial Hall. Fruit, vegetables, house plants, cut flowers, displays, and youth entries compete for cups including the Dauphin Herald Rose Bowl and Rotary Club silver cup. Entries close August 25 at 11 p.m. with the hall open from 5 p.m. that day for placement.
More than 500 members and former members of St Viator's parish joined visiting clergy officials and local civic representatives in Dauphin for the Golden Jubilee of the Roman Catholic church. Most Rev. P F Pocock archbishop of Winnipeg celebrated the solemn pontifical mass of thanksgiving and delivered the sermon.
Two Dauphin residents longtime members of St Viator's parish were honored at the Golden Jubilee, with about 400 guests at the D.M.L.C.C. industrial building banquet. The celebration ended with a pontifical high mass at St Viator's church led by Most Rev. Paul Dumouchel and archbishop assistants.
Prospective exhibitors are asked to bring what they have for the Dauphin Horticultural Society garden show on August 26 and 27 to keep displays active. With an early season and the annual show a week later, the exhibits are not as plentiful.
A new trophy joins the cups for gladiolus, Boughen Nurseries cup for top points in flowers and vegetables, the Dauphin Hotel cup for best club display, and the Mrs. James Maynard trophy for juniors. The new award honors the individual with the most points.
Dauphin town council plans Thursday afternoon inspection of Lake Edwards and reservoir area in the mountain to address taste disturbances in the water. They also authorize immediate repairs to soft spots at the tower front at the airport and ask the engineer to prepare fall repair plans.
The Manitoba department of public works completed a by pass of Dauphin for motorists on No 20 to Winnipeg and No 5 to Winnipegosis. The junction is one mile east of Dauphin and traffic relief and mileage savings are cited. Construction has started on No 20 at Fork River, District Engineer Larry W Blackman reports.
The second seasonal gladiolus competition by the Dauphin Horticultural Society takes place Saturday afternoon in the Dauphin Hotel building. A. J. Schmiedt leads the championship after last week's show as entries close at 12 noon. Prizes total based on points across two shows: first $5, second $4, third $3, fourth $2.
A. J. Schmiedl of Dauphin swept all five prizes in the Dauphin Horticultural Society gladiolus show. He won with a light pink Friendship, white Sierra Snow, lavender Heirloom, light rose Folklore, and Wallace's Jewellery. The event drew 30 entries from eight exhibitors and benefited Churchill excursion visitors at the CNR station.
