Postal Survey Planned for Dauphin Letter Carrier Service

A new postal survey for Dauphin will run in the last week of August. A Winnipee Asc supervisor will lead the survey with area officials and a town em supervisor. The move follows a council request and a June estimate of 242 potential call points and 2750 calls needed for service in 1961.

Freak Fire on Avenue C Sets Trees Ablaze

An overturned safety flare ignited gas and oil on Sixth Avenue Northwest causing a fire that leaped over 25 feet and exploded a manhole near Maine Street. Maple Leaf Construction crews had just laid a preparation of oil and gas when the flare was toppled, dousing boulevard trees and nearby properties in burn marks.

Northern Zone Civil Defence Officer Appointed in Dauphin

Dauphin becomes northern Manitoba Civil Defence HQ with Ivan Mault named fulltime officer in charge. Mault arrives in Dauphin after decades in Swan River area to supervise the northern zone from the Gardner Block. The move completes provincial three zone system overseen by minister Gurney Evans.

Visitors Welcome Dauphin Guests on Churchill Excursion

An 18 coach, 241 passenger Dauphin Churchill excursion train arrived to a cordial greeting by civic leaders. Honorary citizenship certificates and souvenir literature were presented, with a reception on the station lawn and notes on hospitality, including Fred Chaykowski and a Seattle visitor helped with shoes.

Dauphin Garden Show Highlights Aug 19 Exhibits

The Dauphin Horticultural Society invites Churchill excursionists and residents to the annual Garden Show August 19 at the DMCC exhibit building. Doors open 1 pm with entries in flowers fruit honey and vegetables and a Sytnick Memorial trophy for flower arranging. An afternoon and evening program includes welcome remarks by government and civic leaders, Boy Scouts, tea, and trophies followed by an auction led by Ben Yallop selling flowers squash honey and fruit.

Town Building Permits Near Two Million Dollar Mark

July permits push Dauphin’s total to about 1 831 000 with home and apartment projects driving growth. Seven months report shows 24 permits totaling 18310 000 versus 715 50 for the same period in 1959. Institutional buildings among current approvals include Dauphin General Hospital St. Viator's Church and Grace People Church. The new Safeway Store adds a 175 000 commercial permit.

W R Slight Appointed Area Postal Superintendent Residence Set

W R Slight named Area Postal Superintendent covering the Manitoba northwest to Fort Churchill and parts of the Northwest Territories. A Winnipeg veteran of the service since 1934, he will reside at 212 River Avenue with his wife and two sons Jeffrey and Bruce. The family enjoys wolfing curling and swimming. Mrs Slight gardens and belongs to a lodge in Charleswood.

Gladiolus Show Impresses Churchill Exhibition Visitors

H W Hazell judged gladiolus and arrangement classes for Churchill excursionists at the CNR station. Top spike won by Keith Schmiedl, with 23 glads and 24 arrangements judged. Second to fourth prizes went to A J Schmiedl entries, fifth to Mrs A A Inkster. Hazel praised the display noting novelty and modernistic arrangements, with B C Goodhand winning fall colors.

Welcome Mat Out For Churchill Train No 2 This Friday

The second 1960 CNR Churchill excursion train will depart Winnipeg Friday with over 250 tourists aboard. It will reach Dauphin at 2 50 p m where visitors receive warm hospitality similar to the prior trip. Most travelers hail from Ontario Manitoba and Quebec with Americans from Great Lakes states and California. Dauphin residents are urged to offer cars for Friday afternoon sightseeing. Wm McCernon leads the tour committee and invites local calls at 8752. Journalists M rs Dorothy Barker and Alan Keller will ride the train.

New CNR Freight Agent Appointed

Fred A. Chapman promoted to CNR freight and passenger service agent in Dauphin replacing retiring SM. Borden who moved to Winnipeg. Chapman, in Dauphin since 1952, came from Hudson Bay Saskatchewan as car service operator. He married Eva Frenette of Fort Frances. two daughters Elaine and Gail.

Safe Boating Clinic Opens Monday At Crooked Creek Dock

Sponsored by the Dauphin Rotary Club the Safe Boating Clinic will run Monday through Wednesday at the Crooked Creek dock on Lake Dauphin. Instructors will demonstrate boat loading engine mounting safety equipment near shore rules of the road and emergency procedures with emphasis on water skiing docking and canoe launching. Attendance is free and sessions run 9 30 am to noon and 2 pm to 5 pm with evening films on the sport. Residents and visitors are urged to join with families.
