Fire department launches crackdown on motorists who follow fire vehicles to scenes. Delays from interference endanger homes and crews. RCMP will automatically tag unauthorized followers near incidents.
The Lake Dauphin Advisory Board met July 28 in the Dauphin council chambers and recommended constructing a new dam at the mouth of the Mos River. Attending were board members led by J A Griffiths and stakeholders from Day Game and Fish and several rural municipalities. A joint meeting followed with MLA Stewart McLean and MP Elmer Forbes to discuss lake level representations and site location.
A blaze at the Dauphin Manitoba Hydro terminal damaged a control room and cut power west from Dauphin. Service interruptions ranged from 40 minutes to nearly two hours as local staff bypassed the terminal and installed a temporary control system. The fire department contained the blaze and officials expect a new outside control system and improved facilities after assessing damage.
The Lake Dauphin Advisory Board met on July 28 as LG Sneath urged keeping lake levels within 853 to RM 4 and deploying dykes along the Mossey River. He cited 12 000 beach users weekly and cottages valued around 440 000 dollars while presenting 98 petitioners backing higher water levels.
The RM council passed a resolution at a recent meeting requesting the provincial government to build a new dam at the mouth of the Massey River to regulate water level in Lake Dauphin. The aim is to improve lake usefulness for cottages, farms, and residents around the shore.
The Manitoba Women’s Institute advisory board met July 31 to August 2 to set the 1961 62 program. A $100 Frances McKay bursary will assist Brandon College entrants to science. Neepawa was chosen for entrance . The study project focus is Adult education in all its phases with a local orientation. Members of the executive include President Mrs George Black and Vice President Mrs Don Burton with a full board list of officers and directors.
The month shows a hot, dry pattern with August rainfall far below normal. Temperatures reach the mid 90s and only traces of moisture on a few dates. Harvesting proceeds in fields touched by occasional showers, but crops remain stressed from heat.
A 32 year old Rorketon child died Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a backing Dauphin delivery van in front of his home. The incident, involving driver Brian Archer of Dauphin, led to the boy being rushed to Ste Rose hospital where he died. Dr. R L Gendreau held a preliminary inquest Sunday morning and adjourned to a definite date.
Dauphin Ochre Area school board reports extended transportation with two 66 passenger buses at 7 575 each and expanded van routes for 1961 62 term. Old Dauphin moves to Melton, renovations planned for heating and toilets, and property near the board office purchased for 7500 with sale of adjacent house. Repairs include West Bay Bay Centre Woodbend Fishing River Hamilton improvements and Ochre River tile floor upgrades.
Nine coach train carrying 188 passengers from Churchill excursionists arrived at the CNR station in Dauphin on Friday August 11. Local officials and Dauphin Chamber of Commerce members greeted visitors with a welcome ceremony on the station lawn and presented town brochures, flags, and a town program. The reception featured remarks by Mayor, Reeve, and Minister of Education, and included a welcome to the longest distance traveler and a New York visitor, followed by light refreshments and a sightseeing tour arranged by the IODE.
The second 198? Churchill excursion train will depart Winnipeg this Friday Aug 18 with over 200 passengers from the US and Canada. Arrival in Dauphin is planned at 2 39 PM to receive the familiar warm welcome. The event draws travelers largely from the United States with some Canadian visitors and Winnipeg hosts. Dauphin merchants and the horticultural society invite visitors to view flower displays and a vegetable show at the gateway north as part of the town's progress celebration.
The Hort Cultural Society will sponsor an annual gladiolus show in the Town Hall committee room this Friday August 18. Exhibitors must place entries by 12 noon with single spikes or flower arrangements including glads. Members and nonmembers are invited to help prepare displays for visitors from the South and across Canada.
Dauphin’s 1961 building activity accelerates past the seven month total of 1.534 million with July alone at 633,775. Major permits include the Mackay Indian residential school dormitory for 2,829,000 and the United Church building for 247,000, signaling a year poised to rival 1960. The town’s population reached 7,378 in the June census, up from 7, - 6.
