Twenty two countries invited to discuss the Suez Canal dispute after Egypt nationalized the waterway. Premier Nasser may attend, but chances are slim. Britain and France seek international control to keep canal open. program and outcomes unclear with possible delay and UN involvement.
Britain reduced arms and troop buildup in the Middle East following nationalization moves. An airlift of troops was postponed and two paratroop brigades pulled from Cyprus to England. Britain warned of possible invasion of Egypt if needed but expects strong Arab and Asian opposition. Pearson in Ottawa called the situation dangerous but hopes force will not be used.
Marilyn Bell’s 18 mile Juan de Fuca Strait attempt ends as she nears the goal after almost ten hours in 46 degree waters. She had five miles left when she slipped under again, failing to become the first woman and second person to swim the strait. She earned $20,000 in sponsor payments despite not finishing, with $10,000 for reaching the goal. She previously swam Lake Ontario and the English Channel. The piece also notes convention talk in the United States and other world events.
The Dauphin chamber of commerce asks the town and rural councils to take action against unsightly premises along trunk highways entering the town. The request, received at the Monday town council meeting, was referred to the town planning committee.

The Dauphin-Ochre area board approved an across the board increase of one dollar per passenger to school bus fares for 1956 57 as a response to reduced education subsidies. New rates apply to high school and elementary riders with tiered charges and family fare rules. Van route tenders were also accepted for several communities.
Town council divided readings on by law 2388 and approved another measure for a public vote on five liquor license classes. Electors will decide restaurant beer and wine, beverage room, dining room, cocktail room, and cabaret licenses in Dauphin and Ste Rose du Lac on municipal election day.
The second annual Churchill excursion returns to Dauphin Friday at 2.30 p.m. with a welcome ceremony and town car tour. Mayor Stewart E. McLean Reeve John Potoski J E. Burton pledge greetings while George Scott serves as master of ceremonies. Refreshments aboard and a horticultural gladiolus display accompany the event.
Marilyn Brander 16, of Dauphin is chosen as top girl at a Manitoba Ottawa New York UN seminar. She and Barrie C. McDonald 16 will travel by air to Ottawa then New York for a six day UN headquarters visit and educational tours.
The Dauphin Hockey Association sponsors a big Hock-O event at the DMCC arena next Monday evening August 20. Tickets are on sale through local stores and hockey executives. Proceeds support a summer fundraising campaign to secure hockey for Dauphin this winter.
The town and provincial highway crews completed the initial blotter oil coating on key arterials under a grant funded paving program. A second asphalt oil seal will be applied next Monday to streets including Fourth Avenue SW from Main to Buchanan, Second Street SW, First Avenue NW, First Street NW, and River Avenue.
The rural council approved unopposed second reading of a by law transferring lands from Eclipse to Dauphin No 905 and gave first reading to a similar transfer from Old Dauphin No 531 signaling consolidation into the Dauphin consolidated district. A transfer of the W H Rampton farm from Dartmore to Dauphin was received. The Eclipse lands by law goes to the education department for ratification with final reading set for Sept 12.
Vernon R. Quick of Winnipeg hit a bear on the Riding Mountain National Park highway about 11 p m Sunday. The bear was badly injured and destroyed by park officials. Vehicle damage was about 200 dollars. The incident occurred 23 miles south of the north gate as the animal leaped from the ditch onto the road.
A 205 Churchill excursion party plus 35 North Star cooperative visitors toured Dauphin. Mayor Stewart E. McLean welcomed guests and granted honorary citizenship while Rex Lear accepted a mock key. Highlights included a gladiolus show and music by the Dauphin band as the party departed.
A 35 member Arborg North Star Co-operative group toured Dauphin by bus, visiting the Kings Hotel luncheon hosted by local co operative officials. Mayor Stewart E McLean welcomed them and outlined the town’s railway led growth, with thanks from Mrs E L Johnson. The visit highlighted Arborg’s 1901 to 800 population growth spurred by co operatives and the Narrows ferry link over Lake Manitoba.
More than 50 exhibits filled the Dauphin Horticultural Society show at the CNP station with gladiolus arrangements and companion blooms such as snapdragons cosmos petunias larkspur dahlias and sweet peas A J Schmiedl won first second and fourth prizes while J H Delong took third and fifth prizes The event is the first of two shows with the final event set for Friday August 17 at the CNR depot under Schmiedl with assistance from Mrs A Roszell Honorable mentions came from Mrs B C Goodhand Miss Lillian Esplen and Mrs J A McPhee
