Crop reports show harvesting delayed as rains of two weeks hindered wheat cutting and swathing. Drought in late June and a hot July left third year crops short with light yields. flax afflicted by yellow asters and potatoes hit by blight. Southeast areas face little to no harvest due to flooding.
Two former Dauphin residents are named in CNR’s new appointments. W. J. Armstrong, now assistant superintendent at Sioux Lookout Ontario, previously served in Kamloops and the Dauphin division. L. E. Scott, also an assistant superintendent, moves from Saskatoon to Winnipeg after earlier duties in Dauphin.
Glad Contest winner A Inkster’s Catillion Spike takes first place in the first judging of the annual gladiolus contest. A J Schmiedi places next four, toping with ten points. Mrs Inkster has five. A second judging Friday will decide the overall winner by total points.
TransAir Limited of Winnipeg receives Air Transport Board approval to take over licenses for Manitoba domestic air routes formerly held by Canadian Pacific Airlines. The plan includes a two-route upgrade Dauphin The Pas Flin Flon to Lynn Lake and Winnipeg The Pas to Churchill.
The Dauphin Collegiate and Technical Institute faces completion of teacher requirements with a caution fund proposal. Steven Stasiuk joins Mountain Stream, Peter Melnyk to Dauphin Elementary, and David McDonald to DCTI as the board drafts a by law and prepares the first reading for the fund’s creation. First of two trains bringing 210 Churchill excursion travelers stopped for 32 hours at Dauphin. Officials including Mayor McLean Reeve Polaski and Chamber president Mobberley welcomed guests as ambassadors distributed honorary citizenships and town keys. Mounted RCMP and a large flower display drew praise as visitors toured station gardens and learned of local attractions.
A downtown observer recalls two rain events last week Tuesday and Friday causing mud and slowed grain harvesting. Temperatures stayed high until a weekend cool off and hints of more warm weather from Alberta in the next days.
Council moved to pass a by law for municipal road paving over years with a uniform levy of 4.70 per lineal foot of land fronting a highway. The plan places maintenance costs on the town and limits owner liability to four sevenths of yearly paving costs. Proceedings require Municipal Act regulations and legislative confirmation.
Town council instructs its solicitor to start paving of two town sections for 1958. Approval from Municipal and Public Utility board and an $80 000 debenture bylaw are needed, with a uniform frontage levy discussed. A Winnipeg visit outlined board concerns and a special act may validate paving bylaw.
Albert Gulbis 51 of 37 Second Avenue SE died after a 15 foot trench cave-in on the south bank dike near Edwards Creek. He was pronounced dead at 11:30 after an hour of revival efforts. coroner’s jury set August 20 for full inquest at Sneath funeral home. Gulbis survived by seven sisters and three brothers.

The Herald reports winners in the No 5 series of the Fix the Mix Up contest. Winners include Shirley Shoidice of Dauphin with a wrist watch and C J Collingbourne with a silver tea service, plus Mrs A McKillop with a steam iron. The grand prize winner and an original presentation ceremony are planned for September at the Dauphin Theatre.
Four men marooned on Peter Point mountain in Baffin Island were rescued after two helicopters went down in turbulent weather. Lt Oliphant dropped a hot soup filled fire extinguisher to sustain the crew, while a Labrador rescue team climbed the peak and hoisted the others aboard.
