The club welcomes back Dr. Cittle and Clif Robertson with Adam joining juniors for a 16 years and under tourney set for Friday August 2 at 9 am. New arrivals Charlie Vork and George Scott join the scene as renovations refresh the clubhouse interior including floor drapes and furniture.
Dauphin Redbirds win third game against Binscarth to force a decisive fourth game at the local diamond. Laddie Mutchison pitched, Jerry Shaman ski doubled in the sixth to give two run lead as Bob Kabel and Stan McPhee added singles. Catcher and lineup included John Lesyshen Jerry Shamanski Al Evason Orville Mayer Arnie Staube and Bob Mann.
Lois Conner age 16 and Blaine Conner age 18, daughters of Detmar H. Conner of Dauphin, Manitoba, earned two scholarships with averages 86.83 and 81.66. They plan to return for grade 12 then pursue teaching at university after attending Eclipse, Henderson, and DCTI in Alberta and Saskatchewan roots.
The Dauphin Horticultural society judged August eighth at the CNR station for Churchill excursion visitors. Mrs A Inkster won for a Purple Burma spike while A J Schmied and Mrs W Ludgate took second and third with Red Charm and Spic and Span.
The Dauphin-Ochre area approves an extensive 1958 program for A group rural schools. Major work includes moving Gartmore school to the Rigby district this month, with 16 projects totaling about 34 000. Works cover oil burners, interior renovations, painting, and new installations across multiple schools.
Attendance at Riding Mountain National Park grew during the 2nd anniversary celebrations with 7 381 vehicles and 25 977 passengers at gates for the weekend July 26 27. July totals show 50 716 vehicles and 161 349 passengers. cumulative since April 1 reaches 345 000. No truck data included.
Town council approved Powell Equipment Co. Ltd. offer to purchase the entire block 1 plan 1273 on the old agricultural grounds facing Jackson street. The firm plans a $100,000 building with office display area parts department and service shop slated to proceed once legal proceedings finalize.
The past week saw the hottest and driest weather of the season with all but one day reaching the 80s. Precipitation totalled 0.2 inches, mostly on the 12th, with traces on Aug 9 10 and 11. Winds averaged under 10 mph except Aug 6 when gusts reached 24 mph and the day’s mean was 14.3 mph.
A new crop season begins with Jim Paul receiving a load of wheat graded No. 2 Northern at 62 pounds per bushel at the Searle elevator. Bert McLaughlin followed with a No. 1 feed barley delivery to the same elevator on Monday morning.
Northern Manitoba MP indicates a near term test permit for a low power relay TV system may be granted to test long distance reception from Winnipeg to Dauphin. Northwest Electronics plans a $50 000 permanent relay from Winnipeg to Dauphin with potential northward extension pending federal CBC and transport approvals. Dauphin council may issue a construction permit for a closed TV circuit.
The Northern Mail reports Northern Electronics Ltd applied July 25 with Ottawa to run a relay TV system from Brandon to Dauphin under a Manitoba government contract. The deal would have the province buy five relay towers if tests succeed. a $15 000 payout applies if unsuccessful.
Dauphin council reviews private proposals for a closed TV circuit in town and a potential transmitter station. Proponents seek licenses and road access while the department notes that local wireline systems fall outside radio act control and that a commercial license would be needed for gain.
Dr. Vernon L. Watson was made a voting member of the board of directors of the International High School Music camp just north of Dunseith North Dakota at the International Peace Gardens. This brings the number of Canadians on the board to eight, with the rest being 12 Americans.
Churchill excursionists on the 22nd annual Hudson Bay tour arrived with nearly 200 from across North America and beyond. Dauphin welcomed them with a station reception, flower show visits, and local tours as 4-H members handed out wheat souvenirs and bid farewell.
Tour No 2 of the 22nd Churchill excursion will visit Dauphin Friday afternoon from 2 30 to 6 pm. The Dauphin chamber of commerce will distribute souvenirs and host a civic welcome at the CNR station gardens. The visit includes a garden show at the DMCC and a guided tour of the town with band music and refreshments. Merchants are asked to display flags and residents are urged to provide cars for tours, contact Bob Oliver.
The Winnipeg Tribune reports a proposed Manitoba relay TV project from Brandon to Dauphin. If permission is granted, the province must pay the company 15000 regardless of success, and 500000 if the system works. Northern Electronics Ltd signed the contract. tests in May were only partly successful. Another firm may bid for a northern Manitoba relay, with Dauphin interests eyeing a separate iTV station.
