Edwards Creek drainage project begins Monday

Work started Monday on the Edwards Creek drainage project in Dauphin rural municipality, largest of its kind. Total cost around 315,000 with 120,000 to be spent this year. Dominion government covers half, province one-third, and municipality one-sixth. Project aims to divert, widen, and ditch Edwards Creek to Lake Dauphin, with floodways and dykes. A smaller Ethelbert project, costing about 120,000, outlined with Dominion 50 percent, province one-third, and municipalities Gilbert Plains Ethelbert and Dauphin sharing the remainder one-sixth.

Ashville Child Dies After Gasoline Fire At Farm Home

A two year old boy Leslie Nervil Quigley died two hours after a gasoline barrel toppled in a barn caused a lamp to ignite the fuel. Quigley son of Mr and Mrs George Quigley of Ashville district born Sept 25 1946 in Wales. The Quigleys moved to Canada two years ago and settled on their V.S.A. farm north of Ashville. Funeral plans not yet set with Sneaths Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Tragedy hits Makinak in four murders and suicide

Five members of the Walz family die in a farmhouse near Makinak in a mass shooting. Mrs Mary Walz and her four sons Kenneth Gordon Lucien and Leon were killed with two shotguns and a rifle. Jacob Walz the husband found the bodies and alerted police. Coroner to hold a post mortem and jury to reconvene for further action.

Safety lane in Dauphin finds 83 percent OK on first test

During Aug 3 to Aug 9 a safety lane in Dauphin tested 496 cars. 411 passed first check, 85 were rejected, 48 of which returned for a re check to earn an OK sticker. Aug 4 saw 148 cars with 115 OK, 25 rejected, eight re checked.

Churchill Excursion to Dauphin Aims for Welcoming Tour

Dauphin’s chamber of commerce plans a 3 1/2 hour stop for about 230 Churchill excursionists from Winnipeg to Churchill. The visit includes a civic reception, tea, and a guided town tour with drivers, souvenirs, and program distribution. Local officials and chamber members arrange cars and routes featuring town hall, courthouses, churches, and nearby attractions.

Building Permits For 55 Dwellings Issued This Year

Four new dwelling permits were issued in July in Dauphin, bringing the year total to 55. Three repair or addition permits were issued in July, total repairs and additions at seven months reach 21. The July value of four new dwellings was 16500 dollars, first six months value 239052, total to date 255552. For repairs July value 1900, seven months repairs total 16325. 1949 totals already surpass 1948 and 1947 for new dwellings and values.

Beautification and Roads Judges Visit Dauphin District

Manitoba judges for the 1949 beautification campaign toured the district inspecting towns and roads. Dauphin won last year’s Shea-Drewry trophy for large towns and the Harvey trophy for a 25 mile stretch of municipal road. Reeve Perc Beauch ll of Rosser W J Graves and J E McAuley of Winnipeg Hector French of Stony Mountain accompanied the visit. The judges stopped at the Herald office but offered no comments. Results to be announced later.

Clowns Lead King Bros Circus In Two D M C C Shows

Bozo Ward leads 20 clowns in two King Bros Circus shows at D M C C grounds today at 2 p m and 8 p m doors open one hour before each performance. The program features three rings 150 performers and a 125 animal menagerie in a one day stand now in its 29th year.

Rotary club announces September 15 16 17 for the annual carnival to be held in the D.M.C.C. building Proceeds will fund club service projects and community outreach efforts.

Parking Talks Dominate Dauphin Town Council Meeting

Monday night Dauphin town council discussed parking on Second Avenue NE restricting to parallel parking for one block. It plans a bylaw and asks the chamber of commerce to study parking meters. Council also weighs metal trash receptacles from Atlas with advertising and space impact and reviews a health unit contract saving about 275 dollars yearly after Gilbert Plains enters the unit.
