Rotary Club to Host Dauphin Boating Safety Clinic

The Dauphin Rotary Club sponsors a three day Safe Boating Clinic at Rainbow Beach Park near the Crogkhed Creek dock on August 22 to 24. Sessions run 9:30 to noon and 2 to 5 with evening sport films to enhance instruction.

Local Grain Deliveries Show Overall Reduction

Figures released to The Herald show Dauphin elevators received 1,152,900 bushels in 1959 60, down from 1,284,392 the prior year. Storage space remains overloaded with 802,200 bushels stored. farmers held 175,000 bushels, up from 130,000, while 515 cars were shipped, down from 595. First delivery was a load of new rye at Searle Grain by Peter Kaschak.

Ochre River Lad Receives CNR Safety Reward

Bruce Waite a 12 year old of Ochre River was presented with a 15 cheque by Canadian National Railways after he reported a broken rail delaying a passing train. The inspection prevented an eight inch track gap and possible accident at the highway crossing.

Lake Dauphin Advisory Board Keeps Present Lake Level

At a July 29 meeting in Dauphin, the Lake Dauphin Advisory Board upheld the regulation range of 853.0 to 854.5 feet, defeating a proposal to raise to 853.4 to 854.7 feet. Attendees included J. A. Griffiths, G. W. McKay, and members from rural municipalities, the beach committee, and local councils. Conflicting views cited sediment buildup and drying fields as arguments against higher levels.

Kenneth McNeely Wins Italian Government Scholarship

Kenneth McNeely, former Dauphin resident now in Calgary, has been awarded an Italian government scholarship to study in Italy. He holds a PhD in chemistry from the University of Ottawa and will study language before the academic year begins. The scholarship covers travel, university fees, and $100 monthly for eight months starting in November, with possible extra pre November language study. He is one of six Canadians to win the award.

1960 Winners Announced For Horticultural Society Home Grounds

The Dauphin Horticultural Society announces 1960 home grounds winners across four classes. Rural Municipality trophy goes to Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Fisher with runners up Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Cruca and Mr. and Mrs. A. Roszel. Urban competition sees 36 homes judged. first prize to W. L. Bulimore cup winner for best kept grounds, with E McLean, J M Douglas, and Mrs. Ralph Strickland among top finishers. The Eclipse Special was won by Mr. and Mrs. C D Gemmill for a neatly fenced and well kept yard.

Brandon TV Station Plans Power Increase

J. B. Craig of Western Manitoba Broadcasters Limited says CKX-TV seeks an increase from 19.6 kw to 100 kw and tower height from 304 to 600 feet. The $150,000 plan aims for clearer signal beyond current area with possible reception in Dauphin. Applications to be heard at the September board meeting.

Rain Delays Yet Benefits Crops and Pastures

Weekend rainfall, two weeks late, will aid pastures crops and gardens. Hay harvest finished in good condition while second alfalfa cut remains. Summer fallow crops stand well though late barley and oats suffered heat, with swathing and general harvest planned next week. Flax pests, notably beet webworms in Dauphin area, Sifton and Ste. Rose, threaten fields. spraying with Topexone is advised.

Ben Hur Film Heads to Winnipeg Manitoba Engagement

Ben Hur the most honored film with 11 Academy Awards arrives in Winnipeg for an exclusive Manitoba engagement at the Gaiety theatre starting August 17. The world premiere was in New York on November 18, 1959, and since then it has played in about 30 cities worldwide breaking records. Shows are evenings daily at 8 pm with a Sunday break, plus matinees Wednesday Saturday and holidays at 1 30 pm under a reserved seat policy.

Dauphin Couple Celebrates Golden 60th Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs William A McLaren marked their 60th wedding anniversary at their son in law and daughter s home in Dauphin after a Monday open house and reception. Family friends came from Dauphin and nearby towns along with Mr and Mrs G Keating Neepawa Fred Hawkins Vancouver Joann Peddie Russell and other relatives. The couple have eight children and 71 grandchildren with a love of quilting knitting and reading.
