Wanderers of Winnipeg win Manitoba junior final over Dauphin Rangers

Wanderers of Winnipeg defeated the Dauphin Rangers to capture the Manatoba Junior Football Association championship on Monday evening. Hamilton and Littler scored for the visitors as the Wanderers dominated after halftime, with Hodgett sealing a 3 0 victory amid a banquet and celebrations at the Hamilton Hotel.

Child Swallows Tack Then Recovers After Operation

Dennis Lacharity, 260 months old son of Mr and Mrs Pete Lacharity, is recovering from surgery after swallowing tacks. One tack lodged in his lung and he was sent to Winnipere for special treatment. an operation was performed.

Jury Verdict Inquest Into Reginald Jas Chivres Death

Coroner presided over an inquest into Reginald Jas Chivres death on June 24. A post mortem found strychnine in the stomach. Seventeen witnesses testified about Chivres actions on the day he died. The jury concluded poison caused by unknown person.

Miss Margaret Steen Wins Isbister Scholarship

Miss Margaret E. Steen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. B. Steen, wins the University of Manitoba Isbister scholarship for matriculating secondary students. Her average 74 represents Dauphin District No. 1, which spans from Amaranth to The Pas and west to Rebiin. The award provides one year of university tuition and marks the second Steen sibling honored, following Eleanor Steen.

Canadian Star Jimmy Ball Dominates Provincial Meet

Jimmy Ball of the Winnipeg Athletic Association won four events at the provincial track and field meet held with the Hickland games. He clocked 9.45 seconds for 100 yards, 21.5 seconds for 220 yards, won the 440, and took the broad jump title. J A Keir excelled in field events with javelin and hammer, while Don Ball claimed the half mile after a close race with Alex Gordon of Hargrave.

A dozen Dauphin golfers faced Gladstone and Minnedosa in Brandon for the Free Press Golf Tourney. Crawford of Gladstone led with 78 as Dauphin players posted scores from 3 to 107, with no one advancing. The hot, dry course likely affected play.

Barn Dance at Dauphin Boosts Band Welfare

A barn dance at the Wm. Cruise barn sponsored by the Dauphin Citizen's Band drew a large crowd. Music by the band orchestra led by Jack McMurray. The event featured a mystery-man challenge won by Henry Veal who identified Cliff Weir. A substantial sum was raised for the band’s benefit.

Dauphin Tennis Club Tournament This Week

The Dauphin Tennis Club hosts a three day event at Vermilion Park on Thursday through Saturday. Players from Grandview Gilbert Plains and Minnedosa enter with two cars promised from Minnedosa. Events include men's singles doubles ladies singles doubles and mixed doubles with daily refreshments and a visitor invitation.

Alex Wallace Escapes Injury After Car Mishap

Alex Wallace scraped through a night highway mishap near Lake Dauphin when his car roared off the ditch after meeting a bright oncoming vehicle. He suffered minor cuts and bruises as the car sustained about 160 dollars in damage.

Bus Line To Run Between Swan River And Dauphin

Winnipegosis Man Found Dead in Shack

Geo Smigerouski, 66, long resident of Reed Peace Farm 12 miles west of Winnipegosis since 1914, was found dead on Saturday at 11 am. He had complained of illness two days earlier while visiting his daughter, and his body was discovered on the road to the pasture. Coroner Dr Medd and Constable Bayfield ruled death natural with no inquest.

District meeting and veterans jewels presented in Dauphin

A district meeting of lodges in District No 12 was held at the Oddfellows Hall in Dauphin with visitors from Gilbert Plains and Grand View. Grand Master Fuller of Transcona and Grand Patriarch Carlow of Neepawa attended. The evening included a school of instruction and welfare talks, followed by a presentation of Veterans jewels to D. D. McDonald James Norton and R. G. Argue for twenty five years of membership. Lunch concluded a pleasant session.

Octogenarian Mrs. Reed Dies in Manitoba Sleep

Elizabeth Mayne Reed aged 97, born Acton Ontario, died August 1 after heart disease. She and husband David Reed, longtime Brandon residents, celebrated their diamond anniversary May 24. Survived by husband five sons and three daughters. Interment Turtle River cemetery after funeral August 3 officiated by Rev Gardner Ochre River.

Mrs. McIntosh and son George of Winnipeg visited Mr. and Mrs. D. D. McDonald at Clear Lake. John Gilbert stars in Redemption at Dauphin Theatre Monday to Wednesday. John Kuiper and son John of Lexington, Kentucky, arrived to visit Mrs. Kuiper’s parents, the Bennetts. Gordon McInnis, recently recovering from a motor accident, heads south for southern Manitoba.
