Hon Ivan Schultz announces a harvest season delay delaying school starts. Grades 1 to 9 will open the week of September with adjustments to cut time lost. Extra days may be dropped and midsummer exams moved, while university entrance tests stay August 0.
W. E. Campbell of this district reports two stalks of oats reaching six percent feet in height. He says they were harvested at raw engles and that the crop has shot up with the belief that the sky is the limit.
Rainfall last week and totals since April 1 are listed by Searle Grain. The report compares current period rainfall with the same period last year and notes average levels.
War Savings Certificates can be obtained at the post office or banks with immediate issuance in the buyer’s name. Certificates cost four dollars for five, ten, or twenty five dollar investments and can be exchanged for certificates. Higher denominations remain issued by Ottawa, with June sales totaling 4084 dollars, up from May’s 2568 dollars.
Dauphin and district report a holiday weekend without local traffic accidents. Authorities credit tire and gas restrictions lowering traffic volume and a lower speed limit as key factors in preventing mishaps despite drawbacks.
Announcement fixes a five bushel per acre quota on wheat oats and barley effective until August fifteenth. Dauphin area reports good grain condition and high yields with storage space tight. Wheat cutting expected by August twentieth and coarse grains shortly after.
In Dauphin a ceremony at No 10 SFTS saw Allan Durston receive his pilot officer commission while Folkersen, son of Mr and Mrs A J Folkersen, earned wings. The postmaster general announces that from Aug 10 complete newspapers and periodicals must not be accepted for overseas transmission to civilians and troops in the United Kingdom Central and South America Bermuda and the West Indies. Readers are urged to forward clippings of special interest instead. Overseas subscriptions and renewals are suspended until further notice with refunds pro rata for unexpired portions.
The Gilbert Plains Red Cross society plans a sports day and baseball tournament next Thursday August 13. The event aims to raise funds and promote community involvement through multiple activities and games.
The Public Works Department began Monday cleaning street ditches to improve trunk drains after completing the new Front street sidewalk over the weekend.
Major Bernard Saunderson commands recruitment at the Dauphin Armoury as 300 veterans from M D 10 are sought. Major Fred Cockerill directs the drive with Ottawa support to enlist last war veterans not over 50, aiming to form new units and place veterans on active service fronts in Britain British Guiana the Bahamas and Canada. Col H R Alley notes the nationwide campaign to raise 2500 veterans and six new companies.
Nearly 600 town children enjoyed a Monday afternoon picnic hosted by Elks lodge No. 57. John Gardner explained the Union Jack’s significance, while Bill McCulloch and his assistant Johnny Love wowed the crowd with card tricks and songs. Moving pictures, free revels, and impromptu contests capped the event, chaired by W. M. Jackson with an assisting committee.
The Wartime Prices and Trade board reports rising inquiries at the local office. Local representative D. W. Blackett said inquiries are being thoroughly investigated on Tuesday.
Police investigate the theft of about six dozen beer bottles from the salvage area at the curling rink. Several local youths are reported to be involved in the pilfering.
The Dauphin Salvage Committee received $32.25 for their last shipment of rags.
Twenty three boys from Dauphin are among 125 cadets at the Ochre Beach army cadet camp this week. W W J Cummings heads the camp with two cadet officers, two NCOs, and two cadet instructors including S Denham. Cadets study field craft drill rifle drill and Lewis machine gun lectures as they endure an early lake dip at 6 30.
No half holiday today due to civic holiday observed Monday August 3. All places of business including the post office will stay open and operate as normal.
The Dauphin girls' softball team defeated Ochre River 15 to 8 at the Ball Park last Thursday night to annex the Moose Barrett trophy. Dauphin's lineup included Joan Robb Hilda Slobodzian Jean Presunka Matilda Presunka Matilda Russell Lily May Lena Semcheson Ruth Beaton Nellie Magalos.
Grace Bell of Winnipeg formerly of Dauphin has been engaged as hostess of the Dauphin Hostess club and began her duties last weekend. Since the club opened May 14 the registration book shows over one hundred uniformed visitors daily.
A World War II era note claims sixty used toothpaste tubes hold enough tin to solder all bomber electrical connections. It warns that the enemy dislikes the sight of money when turned into TNT.
Wartime Prices and Trade board announces five week tea and coffee rationing by top card coupons A B C D E and bottom tickets 1 2 3 4 5. One ounce tea per week or four ounces coffee per week per person. Children under 12 cannot use rations. Plan aims fair share and supply stability as prewar sources are cut off and shipments remain uncertain. About 12 1/2 cups per week per ration.
