The Manitoba B and PW conference comes to Dauphin for the first time on Sept 10. The event features speakers including Una Marleen of Calgary and Stewart E McLean in Winnipeg, with themes on education and representation.

Dauphin Grain Year Totals 1960-61 Reach 1,114,000 Bushels

Initial calculations show Dauphin elevators delivered about 1.114 million bushels of all grains in the 1960-61 crop year ending July 31 1961 down from 1.153 million the previous year. Wheat and barley led the totals with 646 000 and 245 000 bushels respectively while total storage passed 876 500 bushels with 112 000 bushels free space. Swathing of wheat began in the Dauphin district this week.

Churchill Excursion Welcomes Mark Silver Jubilee Year

The 25th anniversary of the Churchill Excursion marks this year with two northbound trains, Aug 11 and Aug 18, giving Dauphin visitors a five hour stopover from 2 to 7 PM. Dauphin volunteers deploy a wide welcome mat and plan a full civic reception with band, RCMP, and honorary citizenship certificates.

Dauphin Fair Highlights Heavy Horse Champion Duff

The 1961 Dauphin summer fair features Duff a fine heavy horse owned by Bill Pease of Dauphin winning top in his classes. William Lepowich of Calder entered Jersey cattle swelled the herd for the fair and is seen with Fairmouth Sybil as the supreme grand champion female over all breeds.

Weather notes show sparse rain and cool July night

The weatherman records only 0.1 inch of rain on the 26th with traces on two other days. Farmers with showers hope for fair yields as temperatures aside a July 30 low of 42 degrees reflects unusual coolness for the season.

Dauphin Rural Dial Service To Begin In November

The Manitoba Telephone System will convert Dauphin rural subscribers to automatic seven digit dialing in November, with Dauphin town users switching to the new system then as well. The change makes the rural switchboard a toll centre and introduces Air Number Calling, with numbers like 638 4062, and will involve regrouping of rural subscribers.

Friendly Town Of Progress And Beauty Wins Dauphin Slogan

Dauphin Industrial Development officials selected the slogan Friendly Town Of Progress And Beauty at a July 26 meeting. First prize of 25 dollars went to Mrs Walter Bialobzysk a newcomer from Ramansk. Runner up Miss Pat Wilson of Ochre River receives 15 dollars. Ten entrants receive silver dollars.

Dave McLean Memorial Plaque Becomes New Garden Show Trophy

The Dauphin Horticultural Society marks its 27th annual show with a new Dave McLean memorial plaque awarded for highest points in the dahlia classes. Seven entries including decorative, cactus, pom pom and bedding dahlias compete, plus a champion stop for best dahlia and a new basket prize.

Suggested Sight-Seeing Tour For Dauphin Visitors

The Dauphin chamber of commerce offers a 25th anniversary sight-seeing route for Churchill excursion visitors on Aug 11 and Aug 18. The drive covers Moon Lake Lookout, Riding Mountain National Park, farm country, Dauphin Beach, Rainbow Beach, Ochre Beach, Memorial Centre grounds, St Viator’s church, St Pauls Anglican and Ukrainian Catholic churches, and a tour of Mackay Indian Residential School, with timing to fit the excursion train.

Council Seeks Action on Vermillion River Second Avenue Bridge

Town council members urged progress on rebuilding the Second Avenue bridge over the Vermillion River. Government officials say the earthwork survey and design work are complete and detour routing will be decided after further planning. Minister John Thompson notes the bridge is not in this year’s program but may be considered for 1962 63 construction estimates. Councillor A Buckwold cites a 15 to 29 year history of the request.
