Memorial Award set for regional festival in May dates
The McMurray Memorial award will be presented for the first time at the regional festival May 5 to 7. Donated by Mrs Elmer McNabb in memory of her father the late William McMurray the silver medal winner keeps it in permanent possession. Competition targets the instrumental section. The festival expects record entries with sessions starting 9 am Thursday in Henderson auditorium and town hall events including choral readings folk dancing and piano classes judged by noted adjudicators. Senior performances run Thursday and Friday evenings featuring Dauphin Little Theatre United church choir Gilbert Plains and Dauphin Boys Bands and Green Howards folk dance groups.

Michael F. Szewczyk a 44 year old farmer and municipal official was named as the Progressive Conservative candidate for the Dauphin federal riding. The nomination occurred Friday with about 100 delegates present. Szewczyk has served as councillor reeve and secretary treasurer of Dauphin municipality and chaired the Dauphin Ochre area school board.

Sandringham to Get New School This Year
Sandringham, seven miles west of Dauphin, will receive a new school this summer. The Area Board plans drawings and education department approval to start work soon. Trustees favor a Fishing River style building with brick finish insulation and glass blackboards for a well lit, warm classroom facing west.

Laurier Youths Win Top Honors in 1949 Short Course
Laurier youths Gilbert Van Humbeck Louis Maguet and Guy Lapointe led the boys to first place in the grand team aggregate with 4739 points. They scored four firsts and a second in team judging and four firsts two seconds and two thirds in individual contests. A Laurier girls team from Fork River led by Margaret Kime La Re tta Berkis and Ruth Dale placed second in the team aggregate with 4354 points, winning two team firsts and a second along with two firsts and two seconds individually. Gilbert Van Humbeck won the individual grand aggregate with 1609 points, Louis Maguet at 1581 earned second and a cup donated by Mrs. J. Maynard for beginners’ individual aggregate. Third in the individual aggregate went to Gus Lapointe. Loretta Berkista n Fork River and Aurelia Badolosky of Ethelberto placed second and third in the beginners’ section.
