As Red River swells to near 1948 levels Emerson residents flee floodwaters with 250 evacuated from 1 000. Manitoba braces for securing rail lines and keeping Winnipeg connections open while health officials inoculate residents against typhoid amid the rising waters.
Six provinces Ontario Manitoba British Columbia Alberta Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island signed agreements with the federal government to cooperate on the 5000 mile Trans Canada Highway. Estimated cost tops 300 million dollars. Quebec declined due to insufficient provincial protections. Signatures from the remaining provinces were delayed for clarification and minor concessions.
Henry Walter Ritchie Gemmel, 65, of 505 Vermillion Street, will retire as Dauphin district engineer after 23 years with Manitoba provincial public works. Since 1927 he oversaw major trunk highways and market roads, recalls horse patrol days and two major floods, and will continue as a land surveyor this summer.
The Dauphin Agricultural Society has forwarded a draft grant agreement to the minister of agriculture for consideration. The plan seeks $100,000 from the Dominion over ten years toward a $300,000 program to develop a new fair grounds including an arena, exhibit buildings, and grounds improvements.
The Dauphin Little Theatre group presents a three act play The Adventures of Grandpa at the town hall Friday and Saturday evenings under director W G Booth. The cast includes Eva Watson Eleanor Deane Olie Kupczyk Mildred McMurray Shirley Poole I Thomas R Sutton A Roytenberg and J A Shields.
Dauphinites awoke to a light snow fall in April and joked about the weatherman. The week brought cooler temperatures with a high of 56.3 degrees and a low of 23.9, with 0.2 inch rain on Friday and traces of snow or snow and rain on several days.
The Dauphin Herald added a Model 5 Linotype, becoming the paper's third typesetting machine after two Intertypes. The former Ukrainian type Linotype from The New Pathway in Winnipeg required only a keyboard and type switch. The Herald aims to speed weekly newspaper production and job printing. Purchased from H Thomson & Company of Winnipeg.
The temporary income tax office at Dauphin Town Hall will stay open until 5 pm Monday May 1 for district residents to file returns. Operated by N. J. Burnside and W. Kandia from Winnipeg, the office provides information checks and assistance with computations but does not prepare returns. It accepts cheques or money orders but handles no cash.
Ward to broadcast an address by W. J. Ward M P for Dauphin on Farm Prices Stabilization tonight at 9 P M over CJGX Yorkton radio station. The program covers policy and regional impacts for voters in the Dauphin constituency.
The Dauphin chamber of commerce discussed organizing a relief campaign for Red River valley flood victims if needed, and sent a letter to Manitoba Red Cross seeking immediate food or clothing needs and potential district assistance. The group also reviewed park road status, post office building plans, and a proposed fair holiday timing.
Dauphin branch president Paul Olearnek leads a meeting with guest Wladmir Kossar of Winnipeg. He pledges support to the D.M.C.C. while Kossar urges unity, condemns communism, and calls for peacetime readiness and community service. A fundraising dance was planned to fund a new floor. Four executives pledged assistance to advance the D.M.C.C. efforts.
Margaret L. Eastman of Dauphin Collegiate won third prize in the Manitoba Cancer Relief and Research Institute essay contest for grades 11 and 12, as announced recently. Local Manitoba students overall were honored in the annual competition.
George Bumstead was elected president of the Dauphin Country Club at Tuesday night’s directors meeting. Bob Gardner was chosen vice president and Joe Johanneson retires after five years as secretary treasurer. Committees were named for the 1949 season with updates to fees and junior age limit raised to 20. Neil Wilkinson will again serve as manager at the course.
Canadian NationalRailways announces April 30 schedule changes with Dauphin noting Train No 10 through daily except Monday to Winnipeg arriving at 2 20 a m and departing at 2 40 a m replacing the 2 00 a m and 2 20 a m slots. Other nationwide changes require travelers to consult station agents.
