Hockey Association Re-elects Officers

The hockey association re elected its officers at the annual meeting held Friday with Robert Fagen presiding and George Reid recording. Each local hockey group continues with its own officers and a representative will join the central committee as regulation requires. The prior move to disband was reversed last November and no strong push to again disband arose.

At Dauphin General Hospital a son born April 18 to Mr and Mrs Jack Boguski of Ashville. Also a son born April 23 to Mr and Mrs Robt Stainthorpe of Dauphin and a son born April 24 to Mr and Mrs Harold Mansfield of Dauphin.

The Dauphin Board of Trade will hold its annual meeting at the Town hall on Monday April 29 at 8 o clock. All members and citizens are invited to attend. Reports of past activities will be presented and new officers will be elected. C. D. Bates is the present secretary.

Parachute jumpers staged a large exhibition in Dauphin with local Walter Smith making the district’s first citizen leap. Stan jumped 2 500 feet before his parachute opened at 12 mph, experiencing a brief stars moment. An automatic release worked for Mr Collins.

Society Begins Repair Work on Race Track

The Dauphin Agricultural society starts reviving the exhibition grounds track for harness races at the upcoming summer fair. After years of disuse the track is being graded levelled and turf removed with help from the rural municipality grader. Grounds and speed committees oversee the reconstruction with W. D. Strang Jim Brydon and Edgar Chute supervising. Practice sessions are planned for next week.

RAF Pilot Officer Wardle Missing After Air Operations

Parents of Royal Air Force Pilot Officer Howard Douglas Wardle of Windor, Ontario, report he is missing as a result of air operations on April 20. Wardle, born in Dauphin 24 years ago, joined the RAF in 1938 and was recently stationed at Perpignan, France.

Police Court Hears Dauphin Drunk Driving and Disturbance Cases

A Dauphin motor vehicle offender pleaded guilty before Magistrate Thos. Little and was fined the minimum $10 plus costs or 15 days with hard labor for unlawful operation. A resident of an Alberta Indian reserve admitted drunken disturbance, was reprimanded and told to leave town. Two youths pleaded guilty to creating a disturbance in public.

Dry Weather Spurs Widespread Scrub Burns in Dauphin

Farmers across the Dauphin area burn scrub patches during dry spell to prepare land. Smoke fills the horizon for a week with billowing clouds visible from Lake Dauphin at night. In town, vacant lots and piles of dried grass are set ablaze as part of cleanup efforts.

Wheat seeding is about 95 percent complete in the Dauphin area with sowing of coarse grains soon. Farmers are conserving moisture by packing land and limiting plowing while planting weather remains dry and windy. If spring rains come, Manitoba could harvest an average crop despite rising wheat prices and a forecast of lower global yields.
