Dauphin Manitoba meeting of merchants businessmen and citizens urged economy over higher taxes. speakers blamed provincial debt and interest costs while opposing commodity or income taxation and calling for reducing interest payments or restructuring debt.
Harry Arnold, on duty for Canadian National Railway near The Pas, was crushed when a switch engine moved a locomotive while he worked beneath it. One leg was amputated, the other severely injured. He is hospitalized and reports say his recovery progresses slowly. Family members travel to The Pas with CN Rail support.
The annual meeting of the Canadian Club of Dauphin was held on 10 April. Officers elected include President R. M. Stevenson Vice-President G. H. Crimes Secretary John Hamilton Assistant Secretary Joe Grant Treasurer G R Mutliger and executive members Chas Padsley Rev D H Telfer G M Churchill D D McDonald A Katz R E Hamilton.
The meeting carried a resolution favoring unemployed citizens earning a living off the land rather than urban relief. It argues that land employment would lower carrying costs and reduce tax burdens while urging further exploration of this relief approach.
The United Church auditorium hosted a well attended annual Choir Concert on Wednesday April 5. Led by Marshall Neal with soloist Miss Marjorie Hopkins and accompanist Miss Irma Struthers the 40 member choir performed lively numbers including Merry June and Dvorak Goin Home. Readings by Mrs. R. P. Eastman and a solo set by Robbie Neal capped a polished program.
The Dauphin town council approved an annual $500 payment to the Rural Municipality of Dauphin to exempt its properties in town from taxes. The measure aims to preserve harmonious inter-municipal relations while a broader tax exemption bill is debated. Mayor Bennett and several councillors attended, with reports on health, public works, lighting rates, and local civic events discussed.
The annual meeting of the Lady Golfers of the Dauphin Country Club was held Tuesday April 1 in the Dauphin Theatre. Officers elected include Captain Mrs Vasbinder Vice Captain Mrs Peebles Sec Treas Mrs Crimes and several committees with members such as Mrs Rogers Miss Code Mrs White Mrs Katz and Mrs Campbell.
Ray Robinson of Edmonton Alberta confessed to kidnapping Haskell Bohn last summer in St. Paul Minnesota. District Judge J W Boerner sentenced him to up to 25 years in prison after Robinson pleaded guilty. Bohn, 21, son of a refrigerator manufacturer, was seized with another man and held in Minneapolis for about a week before release after a $12,000 ransom.
The first northern Manitoba dramatic festival will be held in Dauphin next month with seven entries. Winnipegosis Roblin McCreary Dauphin Plains Eclipse School district Grandview Wicklow district and Dauphin Little Theatre enter one act plays judged by a Manitoba Drama League adjudicator. The festival winner advances to Manitoba finals in Winnipeg in June.
The Ste Amelie district reports the drowning of Gerard Vanderdick aged 10 and his sister Reta aged 2 after ice broke on a creek on their farm. Their father and two brothers attempted rescue. another rescuer disappeared beneath the ice. Bodies recovered late that night. R.C.M.P. and coroner Dr. R. L. Gendreau investigated, no inquest needed.

Wednesday program features The Ghost Train a sharp British comedy mystery with Conan Poyle’s The Lost Special twelve episodes. Also Krazy Kat Birth of Jazz and Marie Dressler attraction. Family Night 50¢ admission 2.30 matinee with children 1c adults 26c.
