The February index shows Petrusry down 17 from January and 24 from last December's peak, with meat prices, especially beef at five cents lower per pound, driving the decline. Civil defence leaders announce a public meeting in the town hall council chamber on Monday April 21 at 8 p m. Lloyd Sneath reports on the program structure in Canada and Dauphin’s role. 165 volunteers enrolled locally with 139 nurses included.
Dauphin-Ochre area board awarded Malcom Construction of Winnipeg a 29370 contract to add a brick reinforced three room extension atop the MacKenzie school auditorium. J N Semmens Winnipeg architect says the project requires expert handling of existing structures with a completion target of August 15 for September opening. The addition includes air improved wards, fluorescent lighting, acoustics ceiling and will be financed within the 1952 budget without new debentures.
About 1500 hockey fans plan to march in Brandon this afternoon as Dauphin Kings vie for western Canada senior hockey supremacy. Mayor Bullmore prompts noon closures. parade forms on Fourth avenue at 1 pm and starts at 2 pm with bands from Fork River and Minnedosa, plus Franko the mule led by Albert Minty.
Franko the mule will lead a 1590-strong parade in Brandon this afternoon to celebrate hockey and the local hit Mule Train. Albert Minty owns the mule. Franko is set to ride in Lampard’s conveyance as fans expect to see the Kings in Canmore action and a lasting Manitoba impression.
Influential speakers will address the northern Manitoba seed grain and bacon show in Dauphin in the D.MLC.C. hall on Friday at two o clock. Harold Scotchmer discusses bacon carcass show and hog quality factors while the Manitoba Canadian seed growers association president updates wheat rust varieties. About 70 registrations are in for the short course, with expected growth beyond 100.
The area board discussed constructing a cement block garage to replace the one destroyed by fire. Blueprints show a $10,449.14 building to house four buses and a truck with a grease pit and oil heating system. A Whitmore school site was mentioned for location. The April 21 meeting will review further.
W. J. Ward, M.P. of Dauphin, says funds are available to hard surface the No. 10 highway through Riding Mountain National Park. The 1952-53 park program earmarks 599,900 for buildings and roads, 12,000 for equipment. Major items include 34.5 miles of plant mix surfacing, by pass construction at Wasaga, and a forest station road plus a patrol cabin. Equipment buys include a bombardier snowmobile and fire‑fighting gear.
The Consumers Budget lowers excises on cigarettes cars radios washing machines and many goods while masking tax relief in personal income tax changes. Abbott keeps defence surtax and social security shifts offset gains, raising annual tax liability versus 1951 and easing only selective levies.
The Dauphin figure skating club set up a nominating committee led by John Tycholis Harry Atkinson and Mrs A R Banner at the annual meeting. The group discussed a fall election in October to refresh the executive with experienced members while inviting new talent. The treasurer reported sound finances and proposed raising insurance on costumes from 1000 to 2000.
A Wilson River district delegation asked the area board to send the school bus up Kilty road to pick up about 10 or 11 high school students for classes in Dauphin. The matter was referred to the transportation committee. The board also approved a $10 expense for a rural area educational film.
Canmore Legionnaires defeated the Dauphin Kings 9 7 before 3 000 at the Wheat City Arena Brandon to seize a one game edge in the western Canada intermediate final. Coach Chakowski V Bannon and Hrushka sparked a fast start.
Canmore's Whitehead and Hrushka sparked a late surge as Dauphin built a two goal lead in the third. V Bannon and Chakowski answered for Canmore, but Dauphin held on to a 6 4 edge until the final minutes. Goaltenders Haddrell and Lancaster stood tall amid brisk back and forth action.
