Nominations for the provincial vote occur April 12 with no CCF candidate expected. In Ste. Rose a two way race is anticipated as Paul Prince faces Dane McCarthy, Liberal-Progressive supporter of Bracken.
Thieves broke into the Dau Phin Consumers' cooperative Friday evening and carried away wares valued at over twelve dollars. Stolen items included 57 flashlight batteries a flashlight a car bearing worth 5.26 and several smaller articles. The skating arena was entered last weekend with a ventilation door forced open but nothing was reported stolen.
Town engineers criticize gravel streets on Main at the south end as insufficient for heavy traffic. Dauphin cannot budget hard surfacing. Residents blame inadequate funding and tax structures, noting cars park in wet ditches, creating ruts that worsen streets. Dauphin has 21 miles of roads and 42 miles of ditches with limited gravel supply due to Good.
The Manitoba Power Commission may build a Minnedosa to No. 7 Bombing and Gunnery School power line to supply electricity and likely extend toward No. 10 S.F.T. The plan envisions the commission buying current from towns and reselling to the school at about a third of construction cost, with possible future expansion to Gilbert Plains and Grand View.
The town power plant hit a new peak of 840 kilowatts on Saturday, holding 824 kilowatts average for about thirty minutes. On March 1 output reached 650 kilowatts, surpassing the old record by 80 kilowatts. The prior high for this season was 470 kilowatts. Total plant capacity is about 1025 kilowatts, per town engineer T. R. Cockl. Lines from Grandview and Gilbert Plains are fed from Dauphin.
Authorities announce regulation banning heavy trucks on trunk highways while street grading proceeds. The city will prioritize worst streets for graveling at earliest opportunity.
Dauphin stores will stay open all day Thursday for the Good Friday holiday. A statutory holiday in any week automatically cancels the Thursday schedule.
Up to Wednesday about 60 rooms were listed with ten rented. Citizens posting rooms at the Employment Office could help match lodgers with landlords. Delong warned that if rentals were not reported, vacancies would be mislisted and street tramping would resume. A phone call to the Employment Office would notify the clerk of rentals and relist when vacant again.
A partial report shows 744 pledges to save 3454 monthly with 159 honor pledges totaling 596. The rest are regular pay and bank deductions. War savings certificates bought up to March 31 total 42818. Dauphin division of CNR signs up for 2078 monthly. 93 employees under employer plan pledge 398 monthly. Nine fully subscribed concerns include court houses public works Eaton Woolworth Safeway Swift’s creamery. Final totals likely exceed 4000 monthly.
William Lisowsky Social Credit candidate confirms he will contest the Ethelbert constituency. The Herald notes his affirmation follows a recent convention adjourned for consideration. Two others, N. A. Hryhorczuk Liberal-Progressive and F. S. Zaplitney CCF, are nominated to run.
The Dauphin Federated War Fund Association explains it will not launch a new general appeal this year for the Canadian War Services Fund. Individuals who were absent or unable to contribute previously may donate locally, with funds forwarded to the Winnipeg committee.
Citizens of Dauphin and district are invited to the public opening of No. 10 Service Flying Training School south of town on Tuesday April 15 at 230 pm. Wing Commander A H Wilson will attend as operations include take offs landings and formation flying. The R C A F band will perform and a flare signal display is planned.
The Thursday half-holiday this week is cancelled due to Good Friday. Next week stores will close Thursday afternoon as usual with full-day opening on Tuesday April 15 due to the air school opening.
