Swift coup leaders move to restore order as Mazzilli prepares to serve 30 days until a new president takes over Goulart's term in January 1968. In Washington, Dean Rusk said the US would work with the new government on Brazil's urgent problems.
A province wide immunization drive is planned for early May to vaccinate everyone over six months old. The Sabin vaccine is being used and a sugar cube delivery method is noted. People over 30 who received Sabin in 1962 may require a second dose.
On board HMCS Bonaventure at sea Lt David Oliphant and Sub-Lt Bruce McKay, both Dauphin natives, serve as HU 21 squadron pilots flying the helicopter Pedro. Pedro aids plane guard and general duties near the carrier during the Bonaventure's Cyprus mission with Canadian Army troops and stores.
Bernice Blackburn and Murry Edwards earned top aggregate honors at the 1964 short course climax in the town hall. Blackburn received the Peoples Store trophy and a $25 cheque from deputy minister W. E. Jarvis amid a program of awards, while Edwards claimed the Bert Scrase trophy and $25. Also honored were Lrenda Durston and Francis Chute for other top awards as 90 youths completed five days of agriculture and homemaking training.
Raymond McKillop earned 94 points for his bacon carcass entry judged by Fred Rowland and Neil Peterson of the Canada Department of Agriculture Livestock Branch. He received the Dauphin Agricultural Society shield as top entry amid 20 sides.
Judges Al Martin and Stan Clarke praised the seed grain display at Dauphin's 14th annual show held April 2 in the DMCC arena. Ernie Bosiak won the R E Forbes and Sons wheat trophy, Mrs J A Olinyk won oats, and Darlene Basaraba claimed barley. Thirty four exhibitors participated, with twelve showing for the first time.
Readers endured a volatile March with a final 38 degree rise, then a cold spell and snow. The past week warmed briefly easing coats, but forecasts predict more cold air and browning snow, while April brought a trace of precipitation and a snowy month total of 13.3 inches. The month averaged 5.9 degrees with a high of 42 on March 1 and 12, and a low of minus 27 on the 25th. Winds peaked at 42 mph for ten minutes and 37 mph for an hour on the 15th and 23rd.
Canadian National Railways will launch a new transcontinental passenger train from Montreal and Toronto to Vancouver this summer. The Panorama debuts May 24 as a twin to CN's Super Continental, offering coast to coast schedules. CN VP Pierre Delagrave cites success of the Red White and Blue fare plan on the transcontinental run last October as a factor. East of Montreal another train will follow.
The Dauphin rural municipality declares nomination for area ward two including wards three and four on Monday April 20. Trustee Volkers term 1963-64. by election if a poll is needed set for Thursday April 30. Candidates need two sponsors and property ownership certificates from M F Szewcryk. filing hours 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on nomination day.
Robert M Forbes, Dauphin egg producer, out‑showed rivals to win the grand championship for a white egg box that had earlier won first in the white class. He and other Forbes entries also earned Canada Grade A and additional prizes from the Manitoba Dairy and Poultry Co op Ltd. and R A Nothstein Ltd. The Dauphin area saw L H Smith place third for grade A large white eggs while Dennis Forbes earned a second for Canada grade A large size eggs. Officials hailed the show as the largest in years, rivaling Toronto's Canadian National Exhibition.
Attendees include W. G. Hanbury president and voting delegate Miss Helen Marsh alternate voting delegate D. E. Perrson and Mrs. J. N. Hail. The two day meeting Thursday and Friday features a heavy agenda of resolutions on economic development agriculture education government finance taxation highways and tourist development.
The Greater Winnipeg Schools Symphony Orchestra conducted by Frances Port performed in Dauphin's collegiate auditorium on Saturday April 4. The 69-student group showcased fine music and clear leadership, with Joan Watson presenting Port a bouquet and Mayor Mobberley granting her honorary citizenship. The program opened with Canada and Beethoven Egmont Overture, featuring a Vivaldi concerto for four violins.
Winners listed for the 36th Short Course held during Easter week across homemaking and agricultural streams. Notable names include Bernice Blackburn with multiple top scores in foods, vegetable judging, and overall leadership, along with Pat Miner and Bev Bernice Blackburn in several high team standings. In the agricultural course, Clarke Davies and Ron Hrehirchuk lead in beef and sheep respectively, with MacMillan and Geisel also earning trophies.
A Dauphin event on Friday April 24 will host a Manitoba Tourist association panel discussion at Elevnth Avenue hall starting 1 p.m. Mayor Harold Mobberley will open the session with Jack Hawkins of Winnipeg presiding. Panel 1 will debate the accommodation industry and market demands.
The Dauphin Kinsmen have raised over 7000 for local service work since 1961. Members donate hours promoting sports for children and support national fund drives, participate in parades, and back cultural activities. A recent donation brings total to 6011.80 with 3988.20 still pledged.
