Symphony In Dauphin Wednesday Sees Lea Poli Soloist

Lea Poli will appear as soloist in Beethoven Violin Concerto in D during a Wednesday concert in Dauphin at the collegiate auditorium 830. The program includes Mozart Overture to The Magic Flute Corelli Concerto Grosso Op 6 No 7 in D Major Walton Richard 1 music and three dances from The Bartered Bride. Pupils and students will hear a youth oriented program including Dance of the Comedians. Victor Feldbrill and Walter Susskind co conduct the National Youth Orchestra of Canada with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

High Honors For Dauphin Egg Producers at Manitoba Winter Fair

Dauphin area egg producers shared top honors at the Manitoba Winter Fair in Brandon on April 2 and 3. Rh M Forbes won reserve champion with 15 dozen Canada grade A medium white eggs and received the Manitoba Hatchery Association trophy and cash. The Manitoba Dairy and Poultry Co op of Dauphin and Forbes won first for a box of Canada Grade A large white eggs, and the co op also won first for large brown eggs. Dennis Forbes earned two prizes in 4H for two dozen medium and two dozen large eggs, while Kathryn Felix took third for two dozen medium brown eggs. A total of 139 entries across egg classes. production appears steady.

Festival Trophy Awarded To Dauphin Music Winner Sharon Moore

Sharon Moore won the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No 20 festival trophy as best musician at the Dauphin Music Festival adjudicated by Gordon Hancock. She scored 85 in grade 8 piano tests, 84 in Bach, 82 in Sonata, and with Mary Rodgers won 7th and 8th grade piano duet. Hancock praised three other contestants Marilyn Hiller Donna Sawchuk and Roger Watson earning honorable mentions. Lou Hill presented the trophy at the gala concert amid prolonged applause.

Warner Construction Wins Portage High School Bid

Warner Construction headed by Sam Warner won the $567,000 tender to build Portage la Prairie high school. Construction starts immediately with completion by December 1 this year. The Portage division board accepted the bid March 25 among four bidders for a 46 200 square foot facility with 14 classrooms labs shops and an auditorium.

Dauphin Ochre School Area Adopts 1965 Budget Figures

The Dauphin Ochre School Area set a 1965 budget of 1,013,830 with expenditures up 63,120 from 1964. A special local levy of 320,818 funds the balance, raising the mill rate by about 34 mills in Dauphin town, 3 mills in rural Dauphin, and 2.5 mills in Ochre River.

Dauphin to Build First Senior Citizens Housing Project

Federal approval for an $80,000 NHA loan and $36,250 provincial grant backs a 20-unit motel style seniors residence on old fairgrounds land in Dauphin. The project includes self contained suites with thermostatic heating, recreation lounge, outdoor patio, and fixed kitchen installations. Pratt Lindgren and Associates of Winnipeg design the S shaped single storey building facing south with internal corridors and access to all suites.

Plan For Foot Bridge At Park Entrance Stirs Dauphin Officials

Dauphin Rural Municipality officials question reports that federal engineers plan a foot-bridge across Vermillion River tributary at the park boundary on the field road. Proposals over the years sought a road bridge to aid park access, spur tourism of Lake Audy and Buffalo park, and provide fire access, but federal sponsorship has been refused as outside park boundaries. Officials worry over location and jurisdiction for funding and control.

Basilican Bells Gifted for St. Viator Church in Dauphin

Father Z A Baczkowski announced a Schulmerich Basilican bells instrument to be installed at St. Viator Church as a memorial gift from Charles Martin of Chicago in honor of his late wife Ida Rzesnoski. The contract covers construction and installation by Schulmerich Carillons Inc. The Basilican aligns with the liturgical bells of St. Peter's in Vatican City.

Sunday choir and solo vocal critique in Dauphin area

Donna Sawchuk, 83, received notes on phrasing and precision after a strong sonatina. Dauphin First United Church junior choir entries 85 and 83 showed light attack and polish in The Moon Shines Bright. Come, Thou Fount required sharper consonants and fuller endings. some pronunciation issues and tired top notes were noted. Small vocal ensemble from McCreary girls’ glee club offered two entries with mixed comments.

Neil Houston Joins Eaton Quarter Century Club

Neil Houston was inducted into the T. Eaton Company Quarter Century Club on April 1 as the 10,507th member for 25 years of service with Eatons of Canada. He received a scroll and gold water at the Dauphin store with W. D. Fordyce presenting. He earlier attended a Kings hotel breakfast with local store managers and was gifted a 35mm camera attachment.
