Dauphin to Host 1955 Boys and Girls Short Course

Budget Day Highlights Tax Cuts And Deficits In Canada
Federal budget reveals personal income tax cuts averaging 10 percent for full year with 12 to 13 percent for higher brackets. Auto excise tax cut to 10 percent, tires and tubes tax repealed, corporate rate cut to 45 percent, a royal commission to study economy, and permanent incentives for oil gas and mining. Deficit projected at 160 million for 1955-56 after a 1954-55 shortfall. total year tax reductions amount to 207 million.

Seed Grain Show Adds New Section in Northern Manitoba
The fifth annual Northern Manitoba Seed Grain and Bacon show comes to the DMC C Livestock Arena April 14 and 15. A registered growers section is added with classes for Selkirk wheat and Montcalm barley. Exhibitors must hold 15 bushels or more for sale and crops shown must be from 1954 seed intended for 1955 sowing. The event features a 4-H club section, hog bacon competition, special judging by Frank Lampar d, and $580 total prize money.

Simmons Named Brandon Postmaster in Dauphin Transfer
J L T Simmons, Dauphin postmaster since March 1952, is appointed postmaster at Brandon by the post office department. He succeeds J A Cressey, who becomes Brandon area superintendent. Mrs T G Williams acts as postmaster until replacement. Simmons, married to Annur Johannesson, is 49 and previously worked in the Winnipeg district.

Rash of Break-Ins Hits Dauphin Business District
A Dauphin town RCMP detachment reports eight break ins in the south part of town last week. Four occurred Wednesday morning and four again Saturday morning. Three robberies drained 87 dollars from Dennison Motors 18 from J Buckwold Sons and 7 from Dauphin Tire and Vulcanizing. Locations are Main Street South and Memorial Boulevard. Five premises yielded nothing. Juveniles are suspected in the incidents.

Lady Be Good Charms Full Theatrical House at Little Theatre
Little Theatre staged the three act farce Lady Be Good drawing full houses Thursday Friday and Saturday. Dana Thomas created lively comedy with a mistaken identity while director Wilfred Booth shaped sharp pacing and natural staging. Audrey Shore Jack Henderson Jack Nixon Lucille Morrisseau and others delivered standout performances with strong costumes and witty exchanges. The production featured back stage crew and a trio of emcees introducing each evening.

The Dauphin Regional Choral Society presented Handel's The Messiah in Dauphin First United Church with conductor Mrs. C N Dahlgren and organist Mrs. Winters. Soloists Miss Ane Shore George Parker Dorland Palmer, and others led a homegrown chorus from a 40 mile radius. Proceeds benefited the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund.

Dauphin Board Opposes Lands Consolidation Plan
Dauphin town and Old Dauphin Gartmore districts oppose a proposed consolidation of lands in Old Dauphin and Gartmore No. 905 with the town district. At a special meeting Tuesday night the board outlined two main objections: transportation burden for consolidated pupils and the fear the process could spread further. The rural area and each district emphasised the act limits consolidation to involved districts only and questioned funding impacts including free transport and loss of per capita high school grants.

At the Brandon Winter Fair March 28 to April 1 Glen Powell led the Supreme Champion bull and other wins. Laurent Maguet of Ste. Rose showed the supreme champion Angus heifer Valerie Erica of Rendezvous Second, plus reserve futurity and reserve champion Angus bulls. Powell’s bulls Glen Kair Royal Leader and Glen Kair White Emblem dominated the Shorthorn and related categories.

In a focal police court trial last week three men were convicted of causing a disturbance in a beer parlor. Each defendant received a fine of 50 dollars plus costs.

Unemployment figures show slight drop in Dauphin
C F Bullmore reports a small decline in unplaced applicants at the Dauphin unemployment office. By March 31 there were 1410 male and 202 female applicants registered, with about 1000 of the males spread across the large area served. Most are unskilled or semi skilled and expected to find construction work as spring programs begin.

Heavy snowmelt created flood risks in the Dauphin district but water levels are receding. Road restrictions are in place on Highway 20 from Dauphin to Sifton corner and to Winnipegosis, with weights limited. Highway 83 Roblin to Swan River and Highway 10 near Riding Mountain park also restricted. Officials warn of ongoing road damage and localized flooding on Valley River and Edwards creek drain, with bridges largely intact.
