Coastal quake devastates Alaska and Pacific coast areas

A massive quake struck Anchorage during rush hour with hundreds dead and missing. Tidal waves hit Kodiak Port Alberni Crescent City and other coastal towns while fires and building collapses surged across Alaska Washington Oregon and British Columbia. Authorities urged disaster declarations and relief efforts as casualty counts climbed.

Amended By-law extends Saturday shop closing to Aug 31

Dauphin council approved a bylaw to extend Saturday 6 pm closing for May to August and keep 9 pm closes for September to December. The measure, effective April 3, follows a merchants survey with 73.4 percent in favor. Canada Safeway opposed stricter Saturday hours but supported a permissive framework.

Manitoba Highway Plan Details 1964 65 Budget Release

Manitoba's 1964-65 highway program, unveiled by Public Works Minister Walter Weir, earmarks 36.7 million for provincial highways and roads. The plan covers 121.2 miles of pavement 108.6 miles of asphalt surface treatment and 204.2 miles of grading with work carried forward from 1963.

They note Dauphin serves a rural population with strong Friday and Saturday shopping patterns and reference a 1961 Canadian Consumer Survey showing 40 percent shop Friday and 23 percent Saturday.

Adjudicator to Visit Dauphin for Music Festival

Judicator and music examiner for the Western board will return to Dauphin to adjudicate the Musical Festival with more than 200 entries. Mr Hubble, a noted Canadian choral director, will also oversee events at the Banff school of fine arts and St Stephens Broadway church. The Dauphin festival runs April 9 to 11 in the collegiate and Whitmore school auditoriums, with Edmonton also on Hubble’s agenda.

Charter Proceedings Underway For Dauphin Senior Citizens Homes

Dauphin considers forming the Dauphin Senior Citizens Homes corporation after a 295-person survey guides housing design. The town council approved the memorandum of agreement with by laws, inviting W. Noyes and CMHC officials to discuss designs and funding. The initial board includes eight subscribers Harold Mobberley Edward Johansen Marion Warnock Laura Ross Helen Marsh David Justice Paul Mizibrocky Coney Grant. The charity aims to provide low rent housing for elderly and low income residents with surplus used for rent relief debt reduction project expansion or further housing efforts.

Short Course Week Opens for Dauphin Youths

The Dauphin Short Course Week begins with 89 participants 36 girls and 54 boys from Roblin Grandview Gilbert Plains Ashville Sifton Fork River Laurier Makinak Eddystone Ochre River Lonely Lake McCreary joining homemaking and agricultural tracks. Speakers include W E Jarvis deputy minister of agriculture and conservation. Awards and a queen contest cap the week with social events and a Friday dance. Easter Tour Brings Winnipeg Schools Symphony To Dauphin

The Winnipeg Schools Symphony, eighty players strong, tours Dauphin on Saturday April 4 at 8 30 p m in the collegiate auditorium. Dauphin Port sponsors with former concert master now Winnipeg Symphony violinist. Dauphin natives Richard Watson violin and Roger Watson flute will be featured soloists. The program opens with rehearsals and includes two additional orchestras for less experienced students. The highlight is the first movement of Schubert Unfinished Symphony. The tour also visits Russell Swan River Yorkton.

Reeve Potoski Head Of New Weed Control District

Reeve John Potoski was elected chairman of the Dauphin Ochre Weed Control District at the first meeting last Thursday. J H Carter is vice president and M F Szewczyk serves as secretary treasurer. Board members include D J Hill representing Ochre River and councilors L J Pockett Elgin Chute. The board will advertise for a full time weeds supervisor and seeks Dauphin town cooperation to act jointly against noxious weeds under the Noxious Weeds act.

Weather notes show streak of record low temperatures

Five prior records were broken as the weatherman drove a streak of cold. From March 24 to 27 and March 29 new nightly lows were set with sub normal readings. Winds 27 to 37 mph and gusts kept conditions winterlike.

Old Telephone Aid Supports Speech Therapy for Children

Four outdated telephone sets donated to the Dauphin association for retarded children are installed in the local school. Manitoba Telephone system arranged the setup through Les Wainwright, district commercial supervisor, to aid training with mirror phones for visualizing mouth movements.
