An announcement for Dauphin’s 25th anniversary of incorporation and a reunion of former residents to be held during the July thaw. A Publicity Committee seeks names and addresses of former residents to mail invitations and urges readers to provide contacts and spread the word promptly.
Archibald Balmer died last week in Thamesville Ontario after a long life as a resident of the area. Born there about 54 years ago he worked in Port-Azure Plains and Dauphin before returning to his family homestead which his father took up over a century ago. He is survived by a wife and one daughter Maria and was well known and respected in the community.
A Friday night 500 card party at Oddfellows Hall drew many friends. Mrs Webb chaired the event with committee Mrs Lowes Mrs Willis and Mrs Grady. After a lunch at 11 30 the results crowned Mrs W Murray and Mrs R Lann tied on score with Murray winning. Mrs Gustafson won second. Gentlemen’s prizes went to Mr S Seward and Mr Dawson.
At a large St James congregation meeting on Sunday March 28 Rev P Duncan signified willingness to accept a call from St Pauls Brandon to transfer by end of June. The congregation urged him to stay but he decided to move. A vacancy and supply committee was formed with J Kennedy and other members to fit the vacancy. Several local residents were noted as absent or traveler guests. The community reported some residents struck by illness and loss in recent weeks. The Ladies Aid and Masquerade Ball events are noted with planned activities and attendees.
A. J. McArthur of Winnipeg son of Daniel McArthur of Dauphin was killed by electrocution on Saturday the 27th while with a Manitoba Government Telephon e gang near Bird's Hill. He was 28, married, survived by his wife and by a father and brother traveling to Winnipeg for the deceased's birthday.
The Dauphin Lawn Bowling club held its biannual meeting Friday March 26 in the town hall with 30 attendees. Over forty of last year's sixty members applied, greens are limited so membership may cap at 76, and improvements were approved including greens, lighting, and oscillating watering systems.
Instruction received by the Excise office states no money is to be accepted for Dominion Income Tax and refunds in future. Taxpayers must send payments directly to Inspector Taxation at Tribune Building Winnipeg.
The Dauphin collegiate held its seventh annual banquet Friday with about 200 attendees including 65 graduates. The Mackenzie school hall featured orange and black decor by La Verendrye Chamber 10 DF and a program of speeches music and toasts honoring the class of 1926 and the school.
On Wednesday before Judge Benny Castle, Corkcliffe school trustees of Fork River sued Geo Basham former teacher to recover $214 claimed as excess pay. Basham countered with improvements to school buildings, denied by plaintiffs for lack of authority or completed work. Judge awarded plaintiffs $214. F E Simpson KC represented the trustees.
Hon J C Elliott secures the West Middlesex seat by 2681 votes after a Monday byelection prompted by his cabinet promotion. He defeats opponent TA Elliot 6520 to 394. Liberals gain in 52 ridings as Progressive vote largely stays with them. Elliott leaves for Ottawa next day to assume Labor Department duties.
The frontage tax combining sewer water and sidewalks is due today April 1. The business tax is also payable now. A 10 percent penalty applies after the due date.
Beginners' classes organized after Easter at Maczi and Smith Jackson schools. Mil men over six years old will be admitted. Schools reopen Monday April 1.
On Monday March 29 J Kz cough faced police magistrate Hawkins for allegedly making a false statement to the Bank of Montreal to obtain credit. The case was remanded until Wednesday with a further eight day remand granted by his worship.
Grace United Church announces Easter service at 11am with Gethsemane Sacrament at 2 54 pm Open Session of Sunday School in the afternoon. Our Risen and Living Lord proclaims special Easter music with five choir items highlighting the celebration.
The Dauphin Scout headquarters on Dauphin Street opened with a leadership class of 25 youths led by Paul Davison. A court of honor announced A. C Wade’s promotion to district scoutmaster and J P Johnson as district commissioner designate. Delegations from Ste. Rose du Lac attended as Dauphin plans for a reorganized troop. Mayor Palmer praised the building and Earl Davison’s services. William Leach and H F Welland were noted visitors.
Mr Geo T McIntosh named Statistician for Winnipeg Electric Company with offices in Electric Railway Chambers. He previously served three years in Statistical Department and in the Assistant General Manager's office. Hom e town Dauphin Man a, graduate and gold medalist of University of Manitoba. Miss Joan Bonnycastle at St John's College Winnipeg home for the Easter holidays.
