Engagement of Major Platichofick Against Barbary Galleys

Venice reports a naval engagement in the Ionian Sea where a galley commanded by Major Platichofick defeated two Barbary galleots, one with 176 men and the other with 70, after hours of combat, killing many Barbarians. Dispatches also note royal and diplomatic movements across Europe, with Polish, Swedish, Danish, and Prussian interests, army deployments, and court proceedings.

Namur Sets Sail for Gibraltar and Barcelona Expedition

From on board the Namur under Sail out of Cadiz Bay August 16 Sir Charles Wager with the squadron is now under sail for Gibraltar to take in regiments and wine then proceed to Barcelona to meet Spanish ships of war. The Marquess de Mari will command the Spanish squadron. The Hector joined from Gibraltar the 19th. Townsend Andrews to succeed Robert Jacomb as Deputy Paymaster. William Cartwright of Parnham marries Mrs. Cartwright near Newark. Excellency George Woodward to Diet at Ratisbon. Admiralty held yesterday. Mr Crampton appointed Carpenter of Buffel in place of the late John Newbery. Charles Pulteney buried at St James's, Westminster.

A dated 1730 letter announces preparations for a larger vessel to replace the current one, with a fourteen year patent. It lists coffee houses and Royal Exchange locations where owners and commanders can sign a consent and pay voyage duties. Also advertised are theatre listings and a vast inventory sale at Surman's Great House in Soho Square, including furniture, clocks, and fragile wares for immediate purchase.
