Pontifical entry of Pope with vast Roman ceremony
The Pope accompanied by 14 Cardinals and many prelates entered St John Lateran in grand ceremony to assume possession of the church. Senators presented the keys, he blessed the people, and distributed coins to the poor. Illumination of foreign ministers’ palaces followed as the new pontiff settled into the throne.
