A Biscay privateer with 359 troops captures a 50 gun ship at Lnglife. procession ends with organ music and mourning bells. Aldermanic election follows the death of Richard Ridley. Edward Collingwood resigns as Recorder and William Cuthbert is chosen in his stead.

Melancholy Scene of Shipwrecks on Holy Island Harbors

Reports from Holy Island recount a November storm night and day wrecks near the harbor. Five vessels driven ashore or wrecked include a Gateshead ship with crew saved, a French vessel lost with all but one drowned, two collier-like ships broken with all hands lost, and a possible further vessel driven through the harbor to Fenham Flats. Aberdeen notes all crew saved on Patrick Stone’s ship but English ship Thomas Whitby wrecked with drownings and cargo losses. A Portsoy ship and another near Pater Head suffered crew fatalities while others saved.
