A long letter defends prior statements as misinterpreted and seeks pardon for alleged libel while touching on European affairs. It notes a hostile report about the Prince of Wales and discusses British and French positions, with ships and troop movements reported from Holland, Genoa, and Rome.
Bristol May 26 report states the Farmer Privateer commanded by Capt Seabourn brought a large Dutch ship into Kingroad laden with silk and wines from Barcelona. The capture sparked much joy though it is doubtful whether the vessel will be condemned.
Dover reports two men of war from the Downs with around seventy sail passing by to the westward. The John Galley from South Carolina arrived at Gravesend. At Deal on May 27 the Swift Privateer Hudson arrived from a cruise under northeast wind.
Yesterday at Kensington a chapter of the Honourable Order of the Fath conferred knighthood on Lord Viscount Fitzwilliams Charles Hanbury Williams Henry Calthorpe Thomas Whitmore and William Morden Harbord with installation planned privately in King Henry VII’s Chapel around mid next month.
