Highwayman Robs Clergyman and Two Gentlemen Near Worcester

In Gloucefer on May 17 a single highwayman attacked a clergyman with a gown hanger and tool two miles from the city along the Lawn Way to Worcester. He robbed the clergyman of a Moidore silver, his watch and horse, then fled. He later accosted two Birmingham gentlemen and took a further booty. Reports say the robber drove the clergy horse toward Ledbury and has recaptured the clergyman.

London Court Orders Printing and Rogues Suppression

The Court under Mayor Salter on November 6 1739 orders immediate printing of the March 2 1737 Common Council order targeting rogues vagabonds and beggars in London wards. It enjoins magistrates to seize wanderers, bring them before justices, and enforce law with rewards for apprehension. The city grants 300 pounds to fund the London Workhouse to receive and provide for offenders. Funds may be paid to the Workhouse and distributed as directed by the Lord Mayor and aldermen.
