Extrait of a Letter from Ostend May 12 describes townspeople rushing to the port to glimpse landing English troops. The writer notes only a few regiments yet arrived, fears about campaign length, and hopes Parliament will defend rights and liberties. Other items record naval dispatches, ship movements, fires, deaths, and theater listings.
Ireland May 11 reports the death of Thomas Cuffe Esq MP for Wexford and a solicitor. Also Captain William Cockburn of the Royal Scots dies aged forenamed. Youghal details a shipwreck where Milford master Stephen Knight and crew were saved by Berborough Galley captain Mercer in violent gale. Scotland Edinburgh May 10 records the death of Kennedy Esquire, Governor of Fort William.
Port News notes arrivals and departures on May 16 with multiple vessels sailing to Virginia Maryland Liverpool and Hamburg. Ships include the Speedwell the Martha the Scipio and the Charming Jenny from various ports with crews and destinations. At Dover and Gravesend additional arrivals are listed from Zante Genoa Gibraltar and Oporto destined for Hamburg London and Ipswich.
