The embassador extols Venice’s power and alliance with France, praising the republic’s prudence, justice, and mild laws. He credits mutual fidelity for lasting ties, notes Candia aid as proof, and vows to act in service of France while honoring the republic, seeking Abbess to further shared aims.
In Deal on May 10 two ships for Gainey set sail through the night. In a letter from Petersburg dated March 11, a report details a Tartar and Coffack force of 80,000 horses marching 400 English miles over an ice bound desolate plain with no forage. After forty days reconnoitering near Ruffian lands they retreat as horses die. The feat is likened to historic marches of Tamerlane. A chief of a herd of Coffacks named Krafna is described.
