Duty on Retailing Spirits Issued by London Justices
In a Guildhall gathering on March 23 1737 8 the Right Hon Sir John Barnard Lord Mayor and magistrates issued orders under a Parliament Act and royal proclamation to curb excessive drinking. Constables are commanded to seize offenders and bring them before justices for examination and punishment, with strict enforcement promised.
