Tea import and smuggling debate spurs new plan

A long note argues tea consumption at 1,200,000 lb yearly with 650,000 lb fraudulently imported and a 50,000 price base for Inland Duty. It urges East India Company to supply only fine tea at set prices A to E to curb smuggling, claiming potential gains and higher public revenue. It also advertises anti-scorbutic medicines by John Moore.

Port News and Sail Arrivals at Gravesend

Port News reports several ships failing to stop in the Downs including the Sarah Hill and Amelia Prethaw bound for Maryland and Rochelle respectively. The Judith Bradshaw from Oporto arrives with word of about twenty ships off Dungeness. Also arriving are the Dorothy Douglas from Rotterdam and the Maphra Smith and George and Frances from Lisbon and Seville.
