New Swedish Custom Measures Tighten Vessel Gauging
An Order of Council requires captains to carry a sworn gauge certificate stating exact capacity, to be measured by a chief magistrate or sworn shipwrights or two sworn masters. False entries incur heavy fines paid to the hospital and informers, with stringent enforcement at Swedish ports and for foreign and royal ships alike.
